Background: Despite the prevalence of patients living with dementia, physicians and medical students, in particular, have received little or no dementia-specific training to help them communicate effectively with this population. Connecting and communicating with persons living through cognitive change requires specific skills: developing empathy and identifying coping mechanisms, symbols, and the stages of resolutions for those living with cognitive decline. These skills were taught in the beta test, Validation for Physicians and Medical Provider training, based upon the evidence-based Validation method by Naomi Feil.

Background: The first disease-modifying treatments (DMTs) for Alzheimer's disease (AD) have been approved in the USA, marking profound changes in AD-diagnosis and treatment. This will bring new challenges in terms of clinician-patient communication. We aimed to collect the perspectives of memory clinic professionals regarding the most important topics to address and what (tools) would support professionals and their patients and care partners to engage in a meaningful conversation on whether (or not) to initiate treatment.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFBackground: With the recent approval of disease modifying therapies (DMT) for early Alzheimer's disease, there is a need for prescribing physicians to accurately communicate expectations of treatment effects to patients and their care partners. To better understand potential challenges and solutions to enhance this communication, physicians were surveyed, after which patients and care partners participated in focus groups.
Method: Step one consisted of an online survey of 100 US-based neurologists, geriatric medicine specialists and Alzheimer's disease specialists to ascertain physician perspectives on meaningful benefits associated with anti-amyloid monoclonal antibody treatment (DMT) over currently available symptomatic treatments.

Introduction: The announcement of an Alzheimer's disease (AD) diagnosis is a complex process that requires careful consideration by healthcare professionals. This study aims to explore the desires of patients regarding the disclosure of their Alzheimer's diagnosis and to understand the practices adopted by physicians in this regard.
