Healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) represent a major threat in Europe. Infection prevention and control (IPC) measures are crucial to lower their occurrence, as well as antimicrobial stewardship to ensure appropriate use of antibiotics. Starting from Italian national data, this study aimed at: (i) describing IPC indicators, prevalence of HAIs, antimicrobial use and appropriateness of antibiotic use in Italy; (ii) estimating effects of IPC variables on HAI prevalence and on the proportion of antibiotics without specific reason.

Effects of capsulorhexis size and position on post-surgical IOL alignment.

Sci Rep

December 2024

Visual Optics Lab Antwerp (VOLANTIS), Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, University of Antwerp, Antwerp, Belgium.

In cataract surgery, post-surgical stability of the intraocular lens plays a major role. This study aims to explore how the size and decentration of the capsulorhexis affect intraocular lens decentration and tilt by using numerical methods. Finite element models included zonules, ciliary body, capsular bag, and an IOL with two open-loop haptics were built.

Between 1935 and 1942, a total of 130 men, aged seventeen to twenty-four, mostly of indigenous Hawaiian heritage, colonized Howland, Baker, and Jarvis Islands for the United States, in rotation, over the course of twenty-six expeditions. As part of the American Equatorial Islands Colonization Project (AEICP), they compiled meteorological data, observed and recorded the natural life of their surroundings, collected specimens for the Bishop Museum in Honolulu, mapped the islands, and built a landing strip on Howland for Amelia Earhart. In doing so, they confirmed U.

There is growing evidence that a wide range of human diseases and physiological traits are influenced by genetic variation of cis-regulatory elements. We and others have shown that a subset of promoter elements, termed Epromoters, also function as enhancer regulators of distal genes. This opens a paradigm in the study of regulatory variants, as single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) within Epromoters might influence the expression of several (distal) genes at the same time, which could disentangle the identification of disease-associated genes.

Insight into dysregulated VEGF-related genes in diabetic retinopathy through bioinformatic analyses.

Naunyn Schmiedebergs Arch Pharmacol

December 2024

Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region People's Hospital, Ningxia Eye Hospital, No. 301 Zhengyuan North Street, Jinfeng District, Yinchuan City, 750004, Ningxia Hui Autonomous, China.

Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is a prevalent microvascular complication of diabetes mellitus. VEGF plays a pivotal role in the pathogenesis of DR. To characterize the VEGF-related genes in DR patients, the RNAseq dataset of DR and normal control were downloaded from the GEO database and analyzed using R package limma.
