AI Article Synopsis

  • The CDF and LHCb experiments have reported signs of potential new physics through unusual asymmetries in top quark production and charm decays.
  • These findings suggest that there may be flavor nonuniversal interactions in the up sector that could link the two phenomena to a common source.
  • A minimal theoretical model involving an additional scalar doublet has been shown to naturally account for the observed CP violation in charm decays without needing any changes.

Article Abstract

The CDF and LHCb experiments have recently provided two intriguing hints for new physics: a large forward-backward asymmetry in tt[over ¯] production and a direct CP asymmetry in D decays of order of a percent. In both cases, flavor nonuniversal interactions are required in the up sector, raising the possibility that the two effects come from one and the same new physics source. We show that a minimal model, with an extra scalar doublet, previously suggested to explain the top data, gives-without any modifications or additions-a contribution to CP violation in charm decays that is of the right size.

Brain asymmetries are hypothesized to reduce functional duplication and thus have evolutionary advantages. The goal of this study was to examine whether early brain lateralization contributes to skill development within the speech-language domain. To achieve this goal, 25 infants (2-13 months old) underwent behavioral language examination and fMRI during sleep while listening to forward and backward speech, and then were assessed on various language skills at 55-69 months old.

We present an experimental study of multiple-electron capture-induced fragmentation dynamics of Ar2m+ (4 ≤m≤ 7) dimer ions in 4 keV/u Ar8+-Ar2 collisions. The fragment recoil ion pairs and the charge-changing projectiles are coincidentally measured using a double coincidence technique. The branching ratios between the different charge-sharing fragmentation channels show an inherent enhancement of the asymmetric channels.

Fully converged nonadiabatic dynamics calculations of the D + H → H + HD reaction are performed at low temperatures using the time-dependent wave packet approach based on a set of precise 3 × 3 diabatic potential energy surfaces (PESs) ( , 2021, 23, 7735-7747, DOI: 10.1039/D0CP04100A). The D + H reaction is mediated by a dense manifold of resonances associated with the deep potential well on the ground-state PES.

Photoelectron circular dichroism (PECD), the forward-backward asymmetry of the photoelectron angular distribution when ionizing randomly oriented chiral molecules with circularly polarized light, is an established method to investigate chiral properties of molecules in their electronic ground state. Here, we develop a computational strategy for predicting time-resolved PECD (TRPECD) of chemical reactions and demonstrate the method on the photodissociation of 1-iodo-2-methylbutane. Our approach combines multi-configurational quantum-chemical calculations of the relevant potential-energy surfaces of the neutral and singly ionized molecule with molecular-dynamics (AIMD) calculations.
