The transport processes of low-level radioactive liquid effluent of Xianning nuclear power station in the closed water body Fushui Reservoir are simulated using the EFDC model. Six nuclides concentration distribution with different half-lives in the reservoir are analyzed under the condition of 97% guarantee rate incoming water and four-running nuclear power units. The results show that the nuclides concentration distribution is mainly affected by the flow field of the reservoir and the concentration is decided by the half-lives of nuclide and the volume of incoming water. In addition, the influence region is enlarged as increasing of half-life and tends to be stable when the half-life is longer than 5 years. Moreover, the waste water discharged from the outlet of the nuclear power plant has no effect on the water-intake for the outlet located at the upstream of the water-intake and the flow field flows to the dam of the reservoir.

Synthetic Biology Approaches to Study Maize Signaling Pathways.

Cold Spring Harb Protoc

March 2025

Department of Biology, Whitman College, Walla Walla, Washington 99362, USA

Synthetic biology approaches merge the tenets of engineering with established biological techniques to answer fundamental questions about living systems and to engineer biological forms and functions. Following the engineering principle of design-build-test-iterate, this review serves as a guide to applying synthetic principles and approaches in maize. We outline strategies for (1) choosing the optimal model organism to serve as a heterologous chassis for maize signaling pathways, (2) designing and building biological parts and devices to express pathway components, (3) choosing an analytical technique to measure pathway function, and (4) optimizing and troubleshooting the designed system.

Electrochemical uranium extraction from real nuclear wastewater with a high concentration of fluoride ions (F-) represents a promising strategy for the efficient treatment of radioactive wastewater and the recovery of the valuable uranium resource. However, the current progress suffers from the interference of extremely high concentration of F- and undesired purity of the final uranium product. Herein, we constructed the neighboring ensemble Lewis acid-base pair sites (ensemble Lewis sites) in bismuth oxides as the extraction material, which was integrated into a designed tandem electrochemical device for efficient recovery of high-purity uranium from real nuclear wastewater.

This paper reports on the effect of the micro-morphological characteristics of stainless steel electrodes on vacuum breakdown properties under the action of a strong electric field generated by high-power electric pulses. Using chemical passivation modification and atomic layer deposition (ALD) technology, alumina composite films were prepared on the surface of the stainless steel electrodes to reshape the surface microstructure of the electrodes. The surface morphology features of the electrodes were characterized in detail.

In this work, a series of Ni/Co-MOFs with high specific capacitances were synthesized as anode materials using a one-step hydrothermal reaction method. NaOH in different amounts (3, 4, 5, and 6 mmol) was added during the synthesis to tune the pore structure of Ni/Co-MOFs. It was found that the Ni/Co-MOF-3 with a NaOH amount of 5 mmol exhibits the largest specific surface area and pore volume, which provides more active sites for the electrochemical reaction and facilitates ion diffusion at the interface of the electrolyte solution/active material, thus increasing the capacitance of the electrode material.

Enhancing energy efficiency in buildings using sawdust-based insulation in hot arid climates.

Sci Rep

Department of Theoretical Electrical Engineering and Diagnostics of Electrical Equipment, Institute of Electrodynamics, National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, Beresteyskiy, 56, Kyiv-57, Kyiv, 03680, Ukraine.

In the quest for sustainable construction solutions, this study explores the thermal insulation potential of sawdust as an eco-friendly material for building applications in hot-arid climates, with a focus on Iraq. The research evaluates the thermal behavior of sawdust when mixed with clay and glue, forming two different composite insulation materials. Laboratory experiments were conducted to measure thermal conductivity, with results compared against traditional insulators like Styrofoam.
