Though dietary factors are implicated in chronic disease risk, assessment of dietary intake has limitations, including problems with recall of complex food intake patterns over a long period of time. Diet and nutrient biomarkers may provide objective measures of dietary intake and nutritional status, as well as an integrated measure of intake, absorption and metabolism. Thus, the search for an unbiased biomarker of dietary intake and nutritional status is an important aspect of nutritional epidemiology. This chapter reviews types of biomarkers related to dietary intake and nutritional status, such as exposure biomarkers of diet and nutritional status, intermediate endpoints, and susceptibility. Novel biomarkers, such as biomarkers of physical fitness, oxidative DNA damage and tissue concentrations are also discussed.

People living with dementia are at increased risk of eating and drinking difficulties, and may experience difficulties at mealtimes due to the cognitive component of this condition. Background: Studies show that tube feeding does not improve clinical outcomes, and professional guidelines recommend against its use for individuals with advanced dementia. Yet, our preliminary work demonstrates a preference for tube feeding among Chinese-American dementia caregivers. We propose linguistic and cultural adaptation of "Making Choices: Feeding Options for Patients with Dementia (MCFODA) to create the Chinese version of this efficacious decision aid intervention.

Background: Little is known about the prevalence and nature of role-sharing among family care partners and paid caregivers.
Method: We studied 440 participants in the 2015 National Health and Aging Trends Study (NHATS) receiving paid help with self-care, mobility, or medical care. Guided by Litwak's task specificity model, we focus on frequency of receiving paid help only, help from care partners only, and role-sharing by task.
