UVF may occur in the aquatic environment through two principal sources: direct inputs from recreational activities and indirect wastewater- and river-borne inputs. The aim of this study was to obtain a first overview of levels of three UVF (EHMC, OC and OD-PABA) in coastal areas subjected to river inputs, untreated wastewater discharges and dumpsite leachates. We selected three eastern Mediterranean rivers that have been impacted for decades by untreated wastewater release and collected sediment in the coastal zone during the hot and humid seasons. Western Mediterranean sites receiving treated wastewaters were analyzed for comparison. The results gave an overview of sediment contamination under these two contrasted situations representative of Mediterranean coastal areas without bathing activities. The analysis of the three UVF revealed the ubiquity and high point source contamination by EHMC and OC in transition and coastal zones, with levels as high as 128 ng g(-1)d.w. OD-PABA was also frequently detected, but at lower concentrations (

Understanding the dynamics of fecal bacterial communities is crucial for managing public health risks and protecting drinking water resources. While extensive research exists on how abiotic factors influence the survival of fecal microbial communities in water, less attention has been paid to the impact of predation by higher organisms, such as the widely distributed grazer Daphnia. Nevertheless, Daphnia plays a significant role in regulating bacterial communities in natural aquatic ecosystems, and recent studies highlighted its potential as a biofilter in alternative tertiary wastewater treatment systems.

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a global health challenge, with hospitals and wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) serving as significant pathways for the dissemination of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs). This study investigates the potential of wastewater-based epidemiology (WBE) as an early warning system for assessing the burden of AMR at the population level. In this comprehensive year-long study, effluent was collected weekly from three large hospitals, and treated and untreated wastewater were collected monthly from three associated community WWTPs.

Shotgun and proximity-ligation metagenomic sequencing were used to generate thousands of metagenome assembled genomes (MAGs) from the untreated wastewater, activated sludge bioreactors, and anaerobic digesters from two full-scale municipal wastewater treatment facilities. Analysis of the antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in the pool of contigs from the shotgun metagenomic sequences revealed significantly different relative abundances and types of ARGs in the untreated wastewaster compared to the activated sludge bioreactors or the anaerobic digesters (p < 0.05).

Polypropylene (PP) membranes have found diverse applications, such as in wastewater treatment, lithium-ion batteries, and pharmaceuticals, due to their low cost, excellent mechanical properties, thermal stability, and chemical resistance. However, the intrinsic hydrophobicity of PP materials leads to membrane fouling and filtration flux reduction, which greatly hinders the applications of PP membranes. Dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) is an effective technique for surface modification of materials because it generates a large area of low-temperature plasma at atmospheric pressure.

The aim of this study was to investigate the growth characteristics of different local macrophyte species (n = 7) capable of growing in untreated coffee wastewater, select the dominant species for use in mesocosms, to study the efficacy of three major species in three replications (3 x 3) in improving the physicochemical characteristics of coffee wet mill wastewater, and to assess the contribution of macrophyte biomass to nutrient sequestration in the constructed wetlands. The current study showed that can sustain water logging and partially saturated conditions. The conducted wetland experiments pointed out the feasibility of VUFCW technology in ameliorating the impurities in wet coffee processing mills wastewater.
