Published: October 2012

Highly ion-conducting poly(ionic liquid) thin films have been prepared in the absence of solvents utilizing a simple 2-step approach comprising pulsed plasmachemical deposition of 1-allylimidazole followed by vapour-phase quaternization with 1-bromobutane.

Highly ion-conductive solid electrolytes of nonlithium ions (sodium or potassium ions) are necessary for pursuing a more cost-effective and sustainable energy storage. Here, two classes of sulfonated -NH-linked covalent organic frameworks (COFs), specifically designed for sodium or potassium ion conduction (named i-COF-2 (Na or K) and i-COF-3 (Na or K)), were synthesized through a straightforward, one-step process using affordable starting materials. Remarkably, these COFs demonstrate high ionic conductivity at room temperature─3.

We investigated several small viral proteins that reside and function in cellular membranes. These proteins belong to the viroporin family because they assemble into ion-conducting oligomers. However, despite forming similar oligomeric structures with analogous functions, these proteins have diverse amino acid sequences.

In Situ Welding Ionic Conductive Breakpoints for Highly Reversible All-Solid-State Lithium-Sulfur Batteries.

Poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO)-based solid-state lithium-sulfur batteries (SSLSBs) have garnered considerable interest owing to their impressive energy density and high safety. However, the dissolved lithium polysulfide (LiPS) together with sluggish reaction kinetics disrupts the electrolyte network, bringing about ionic conductive breakpoints and severely limiting battery performance. To cure this, we propose an in situ welding strategy by introducing phosphorus pentasulfide (PS) as the welding filler into PEO-based solid cathodes.

Polymer Electrolytes for Supercapacitors.

Polymers (Basel)

November 2024

Confucius Energy Storage Lab, School of Energy and Environment, Southeast University, Nanjing 210096, China.

Because of safety concerns associated with the use of liquid electrolytes and electrolyte solutions, options for non-liquid materials like gels and polymers to be used as ion-conducting electrolytes have been explored intensely, and they attract steadily growing interest from researchers. The low ionic conductivity of most hard and soft solid materials was initially too low for practical applications in supercapacitors, which require low internal resistance of a device and, consequently, highly conducting materials. Even if an additional separator may not be needed when the solid electrolyte already ensures reliable separation of the electrodes, the electrolytes prepared as films or membranes as thin as practically acceptable, resistance may still be too high even today.

Ion-conducting polymer membranes are essential in many separation processes and electrochemical devices, including electrodialysis, redox flow batteries, fuel cells and electrolysers. Controlling ion transport and selectivity in these membranes largely hinges on the manipulation of pore size. Although membrane pore structures can be designed in the dry state, they are redefined upon hydration owing to swelling in electrolyte solutions.
