Hungary has a tradition both in biological psychiatry and psychotherapy, and for decades developed together with neurology. From the mid 1980s the speed of development of psychiatry started lagging behind expected standards. Psychiatric care, research and teaching were hit hard in 2007 by unprecedented closures of facilities and budget reductions. Although suicide rates have decreased since the mid 1980s, the country has still the second highest rate in the European Union. The high prevalence of alcohol use and the rapidly increasing prevalence of illicit drug use contribute to comorbidity and related behavioural issues, including the increased frequency of severe violent events committed by people with psychiatric disorders, which have not been properly addressed. The country expects the first major restructuring of its healthcare starting in 2012 since the major political changes of 1989/1990. The profession, patients and their caregivers should use this opportunity to modernize psychiatry in Hungary.

Who was actually the director of the Department of Neurology and Psychiatry at Balassa Street, for a long time also referred to as the Moravcsik Clinic? A polymath, a genius, or rather a knight of fortune who wanted to draw attention to himself by building a clinic for himself? We looked into this on the occasion of his death anniversary. How did he get from the head of the department to the founding of the Psychiatry and Neurology Clinic? He dreamed up every corner of the Department, which was the most impressive and patient-friendly clinic of its time even in European terms. The building was not only used for the recovery of patients, but also for the continuous medical training of doctors.

Franco Basaglia's work is the cornerstone of the radical psychiatric movement in Italy. This culminated in the "Basaglia Law" of 1978, which aimed to abolish closed psychiatric institutions. Under the direction of the National Directorate General for Hospitals, and based on British examples and methodology, a new inpatient psychiatric ward with a high security level started operating at the National Institute of Psychiatry and Addictology in October 2023. As a new, independent unit, the High Security Psychiatry is a niche in Hungarian psychiatric care. The aim of the project was to reduce the burden on the whole mental health care system in Hungary, to increase public confidence in care and the safety of society through organizing of a specialised care team operating in an appropriate infrastructural environment.

Author analyses the process of care of somatic symptom disorder in the general medical practice with special concern to iatrogenic harms. In his opinion the latency of the patients' first appointment with a psychiatrist or clinical psychologist is caused by multiple factors. Patients do not have knowledge on the basic activities of central nervous system necessary to recognize the pathomechanism.
