A dendrimer bearing two cyclam units linked by an azobenzene moiety, and luminescent naphthalene units at the periphery performs three different functions (light-harvesting, photoisomerization and coordination of metal ions) which can cooperate or interfere depending on the nature of the metal ion. It is thus an example of light controlled molecular tweezers in which Zn(II) coordination allows 100% efficient photosensitization of azobenzene switching, while Cu(II) shuts down azobenzene isomerization.

The design of organic-peptide hybrids has the potential to combine our vast knowledge of protein design with small molecule engineering to create hybrid structures with complex functions. Here, we describe the computational design of a photoswitchable Ca-binding organic-peptide hybrid. The designed molecule, designated Ca-binding switch (CaBS), combines an EF-hand motif from classical Ca-binding proteins such as calmodulin with a photoswitchable group that can be reversibly isomerized between a spiropyran (SP) and merocyanine (MC) state in response to different wavelengths of light.

Control of metalloenzyme activity using photopharmacophores.

Metalloenzymes are responsible for numerous physiological and pathological processes in living organisms; however, there are very few FDA-approved metalloenzyme-targeting therapeutics (only ~ 67 FDA-approved metalloenzyme inhibitors as of 2020, less than ~ 5 % of all FDA-approved therapeutics). Most metalloenzyme inhibitors have been developed to target the catalytic metal centers in metalloenzymes the incorporation of metal-binding groups. Light-controlled inhibition of metalloenzymes has been used as a means to specifically activate and inactivate inhibitor engagement at a desired location and time light irradiation, allowing for precise spatiotemporal control over metalloenzyme activity.

Layer-number-dependent photoswitchability in 2D MoS-diarylethene hybrids.

Molybdenum disulfide (MoS) is a notable two-dimensional (2D) transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) with properties ideal for nanoelectronic and optoelectronic applications. With growing interest in the material, it is critical to understand its layer-number-dependent properties and develop strategies for controlling them. Here, we demonstrate a photo-modulation of MoS flakes and elucidate layer-number-dependent charge transfer behaviors.

Stimuli-responsive photochromic units have emerged as one of the key components in the development of multi-responsive switches, optoelectronics, biomedical sciences and many more. The photoswitchability of such compounds depends greatly on the molecular structure, where association of metallic species is found to produce fascinating results. This review is a comprehensive report of all such photoswitchable metal-bounded molecules with group 8 metals within a span of last six years (2018-2024).

Multivariate metal-organic frameworks (MTV MOFs) have emerged as promising materials due to their ability to combine properties that enhance features beyond those of their pristine counterparts. Despite the potential for tailoring electronic properties through structural distortions and defects introduced by linkers of variable lengths, examples remain scarce, and information on the electronic structure is limited. Here, we present the multivariate mismatching linker approach to generate photoswitching nanoparticulated MOFs with variable lattice parameters and porosity features controlled by mixed-linker composition.
