Published: June 2012

Objective: To review the experiences and key factors of establishing an abdominal cardiac transplantation model in rats at National Institutes of Health Clinical Center.

Methods: Dark Agouti rats served as donor while Brown Norway rats as recipient. Cardiac transplantations were performed with a modified version of heterotopic cardiac transplantation. Proficiency was defined as 20 consecutive operations with < 15% mortality and no significant major co-morbidities.

Results: We performed 10 donor harvest-alone operations and 70 transplantations to reach the proficiency level. The survival rate of the last 20 consecutive surgeries was 95%. The mean total operative duration was 55 min and mean ischemic time of donor hearts 35 min.

Conclusion: To ensure a consistently high operative success rate, a surgeon must not only be proficient in micro-surgical skills, but also closely follow the standardized training procedures and strictly observe the animal care and use guidelines.

The presentation of avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID) characterized by fear of aversive consequences of eating (fear-ARFID) has both phenomenological and mechanistic similarities to panic disorder. In this narrative review, we propose a shared model of the pathogenesis of the two disorders, centered on interoceptive sensitivity as the key maintenance mechanism. We review the evidence that fear-ARFID, which involves restrictive eating motivated by a desire to avoid aversive events (e.

Predicting intra-abdominal candidiasis in elderly septic patients using machine learning based on lymphocyte subtyping: a prospective cohort study.

Front Pharmacol

December 2024

Department of Critical Care Medicine, State Key Laboratory of Complex Severe and Rare Diseases, Peking Union Medical College Hospital, Chinese Academy of Medical Science and Peking Union Medical College, Beijing, China.

Objective: Intra-abdominal candidiasis (IAC) is difficult to predict in elderly septic patients with intra-abdominal infection (IAI). This study aimed to develop and validate a nomogram based on lymphocyte subtyping and clinical factors for the early and rapid prediction of IAC in elderly septic patients.

Methods: A prospective cohort study of 284 consecutive elderly patients diagnosed with sepsis and IAI was performed.

It is well established that host immunity plays a critical role in defending against colorectal cancer (CRC) progression. Connective tissue disease (CTD) encompasses a group of heterogeneous, immune-mediated disorders that present with diverse and often non-specific initial symptoms. Raynaud's phenomenon is a common feature, complicating early diagnosis.

Introduction: Chronic abdominal complaints are common in school-aged children. Most affected children do not have underlying organic diseases but suffer from functional gastrointestinal disorders. While many children with chronic abdominal complaints experience school problems, no prospective studies have examined if school absenteeism is more common among children suffering from functional as opposed to organic gastrointestinal disorders.

Modeling fibrous tissue for vascular fluid-structure interaction analysis poses significant challenges due to the lack of effective tools for preparing simulation data from medical images. This limitation hinders the physiologically realistic modeling of vasculature and its use in clinical settings. Leveraging an established lumen modeling strategy, we propose a comprehensive pipeline for generating thick-walled artery models.
