This paper presents a study of the performance of federated queries implemented in a system that simulates the architecture proposed for the Scalable Architecture for Federated Translational Inquiries Network (SAFTINet). Performance tests were conducted using both physical hardware and virtual machines within the test laboratory of the Center for High Performance Computing at the University of Utah. Tests were performed on SAFTINet networks ranging from 4 to 32 nodes with databases containing synthetic data for several million patients. The results show that the caGrid FQE (Federated Query Engine) is capable and suitable for comparative effectiveness research (CER) federated queries given its nearly linear scalability as partner nodes increase in number. The results presented here are also important for the specification of the hardware required to run a CER grid.

Background: The satellite DNA (satDNA) PcP190 has been identified in multiple frog species from seven phylogenetically distant families within Hyloidea, indicating its broad distribution. This satDNA consists of repeats of approximately 190 bp and exhibits a highly conserved region (CR) of 120 bp, which is similar to the transcribed region of 5S ribosomal DNA (rDNA), and a hypervariable region (HR) that varies in size and nucleotide composition among and within species. Here, to improve our understanding of PcP190 satDNA, we searched for evidence of its transcription in the available transcriptomes of (Bufonidae) and (Leptodactylidae), two phylogenetically distantly related species.

Trends in outpatient dermatology appointment wait times for United States (US) veterans are poorly characterized. Given concerns surrounding prolonged wait times at Veterans Health Administration (VHA) medical facilities, the federal government introduced the Maintaining Internal Systems and Strengthening Outside Networks (MISSION) Act in 2018, allowing veterans to receive VHA-reimbursed community care if VHA specialty care appointments cannot be scheduled within 28 days. Considering this expanded access to community care, we characterized among US veterans the (1) overall demand for dermatology appointments, (2) trends in average wait times, and (3) facility/geographic variation in wait times.
