The NMDAR-BK channelosomes as regulators of synaptic plasticity.

Biochem Soc Trans

January 2025

Departamento de Ciencias Médicas Básicas, Facultad de Ciencias de la Salud-sección Medicina, Universidad de La Laguna, Tenerife, ES-38071, Spain.

Large conductance voltage- and calcium-activated potassium channels (BK channels) are extensively found throughout the central nervous system and play a crucial role in various neuronal functions. These channels are activated by a combination of cell membrane depolarisation and an increase in intracellular calcium concentration, provided by calcium sources located close to BK. In 2001, Isaacson and Murphy first demonstrated the coupling of BK channels with N-methyl-D-aspartate receptors (NMDAR) in olfactory bulb neurons.

Objective: There has been a call for neuroscientific studies of spiritual experiences due to their global prevalence, significant impact, and importance for understanding the mind-brain problem. Mediumship is a spiritual experience where individuals claim to communicate with or be influenced by deceased persons or non-material entities. We assessed whether mediums possess specific genetic alterations.

Buprenorphine is an agonist at the mu opioid receptor (MOR) and antagonist at the kappa (KOR) and delta (DOR) receptors and a nociceptin receptor (NOR) ligand. Buprenorphine has a relatively low intrinsic efficacy for G-proteins and a long brain and MOR dwell time. Buprenorphine ceiling on respiratory depression has theoretically been related multiple factors such as low intrinsic efficacy at MOR, binding to six-transmembrane MOR and interactions in MOR/NOR heterodimers.

Abnormal network homogeneity in patients with bipolar disorder in attention network.

Brain Imaging Behav

January 2025

Key Laboratory of Adolescent Cyberpsychology and Behavior (Ministry of Education), Wuhan, China.

Bipolar disorder (BD) is a complex psychiatric condition marked by significant mood fluctuations that deeply affect quality of life. Understanding the neural mechanisms underlying BD is critical for improving diagnostic accuracy and developing more effective treatments. This study utilized resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI) to investigate functional connectivity within the ventral and dorsal attention networks in 52 patients with BD and 51 healthy controls.

Empathy for social pain encompasses both affective and cognitive responses to others' emotional reactions following negative social encounters, facilitating an understanding of their suffering and promoting prosocial behaviors. This study examined how a scarcity mindset affects empathy for social pain and prosocial intentions at behavioral and neural levels. Sixty participants were randomly assigned to either the scarcity or abundance mindset group.
