Probabilistic prediction of Phosphate ion Adsorption onto Biochar Materials Using a Large Dataset and Online Deployment.

Chemosphere

December 2024

Department of Civil, Environmental and Ocean Engineering, Stevens Institute of Technology, 1 Castle Point Terrace, Hoboken, NJ, 07030, USA. Electronic address:

Phosphate (PO(III)) contamination in water bodies poses significant environmental challenges, necessitating efficient and accurate methods to predict and optimize its removal. The current study addresses this issue by predicting the adsorption capacity of PO(III) ions onto biochar-based materials using five probabilistic machine learning models: eXtreme Gradient Boosting LSS (XGBoostLSS), Natural Gradient Boosting, Bayesian Neural Networks (NN), Probabilistic NN, and Monte-Carlo Dropout NN. Utilizing a dataset of 2952 data points with 16 inputs, XGBoostLSS demonstrated the highest R (0.

Chitinases are important virulence factors in Vibrio for degrading the chitin-rich barrier of shrimp.

Int J Biol Macromol

December 2024

School of Biology and Biological Engineering, South China University of Technology, Guangzhou Higher Education Mega Center, Guangzhou, Guangdong 510006, PR China. Electronic address:

Vibrio-induced diseases pose a significant threat to shrimp aquaculture. While the mechanisms underlying Vibrio penetration of shrimp shells and the gastrointestinal tract remain unclear, this study implicates chitinases as critical virulence factors. Despite their inability to utilize chitin or shrimp shells as sole carbon and nitrogen sources, three major shrimp pathogens-V.

Characterization and risk assessment of microplastics in shoreline sediments of the Yellow River Delta.

Mar Environ Res

December 2024

Institute of Ocean Research, Peking University, Beijing 100871, China; College of Urban and Environmental Sciences, Peking University, Beijing 100871, China. Electronic address:

As the intersection of river, sea, and land, river deltas are hotspots for the accumulation of microplastics (MPs). This study investigated the abundance and characteristics of MPs in surface sediments from shoreline area of the Yellow River Delta in northern China, elucidated their sources, and assessed their risk. The MPs isolated from sediment samples were detected and characterized using optical microscopy and micro-Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (μ-FTIR).

Following a recent dramatic increase in illegal fishing by Indonesian fishing vessels in Australian waters in 2022, we conducted an extensive survey of coral reef communities covering 33,000 m at Mermaid Reef Marine Park in the Rowley Shoals off north-western Australia in July 2022. Species richness of sea cucumbers was 13 species (three CITES listed) and 6 species of giant clams (all CITES listed). The most abundant sea cucumber species were the low or intermediate value, asexually reproducing species Holothuria atra and H.
