An improved synthesis of functionalized aurones has been accomplished via the reaction of benzofuran-3(2H)-one with a range of benzaldehydes in the presence of a mild base EDDA under ultrasound. A number of aurones were synthesized (within 5-30min) and the molecular structure of a representative compound determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction study confirmed Z-geometry of the C-C double bond present within the molecule. Some of the compounds synthesized have shown SIRT1 inhibiting as well as anti proliferative properties against two cancer cell lines in vitro. Compound 3a [(Z)-2-(5-bromo-2-hydroxybenzylidene) benzofuran-3(2H)-one] was identified as a potent inhibitor of SIRT1 (IC(50)=1μM) which showed a dose dependent increase in the acetylation of p53 resulting in induction of apoptosis.

The diacetate complexes -[Ru(κ-OAc)(PPh)(NN)] (NN = ethylenediamine (en) (), 2-(aminomethyl)pyridine (ampy) (), 2-(aminomethyl)pyrimidine (ampyrim) ()) have been isolated in 76-88% yield by reaction of [Ru(κ-OAc)(PPh)] with the corresponding nitrogen ligands. The ampy-type derivatives and undergo isomerization to the thermodynamically most stable cationic complexes [Ru(κ-OAc)(PPh)(NN)]OAc ( and ) and -[Ru(κ-OAc)(PPh)(NN)] ( and ) in methanol at RT. The -[Ru(κ-OAc)(P)] (P = dppm (), dppe ()) compounds have been synthesized from [Ru(κ-OAc)(PPh)] by reaction with the suitable diphosphine in toluene at 95 °C.

Chelating agent-induced phytoremediation is a viable approach to completely remove heavy metals from soil. However, little attention has been paid to the interaction mechanisms between the concentration of the chelating agent and the application time on the physiological and biochemical properties of soil and plants. In this study, five chelating agents, namely ethylenediamine tetraacetic acid (EDTA), diethylenetriacetic acid (NTA), tetrasodium N, N-diacetate (GLDA), aspartate dibutyric acid ether (AES), and iminodisuccinic acid (IDSA), were used to support phytoremediation with maize and to explore the removal effect of Cd in soil.

Oncocalyxone A, a 1,4-benzoquinone derived from , exhibits anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial and antidiabetic properties. The aim of this study was to (1) examine the cytotoxic actions of oncocalyxone A on human normal and tumor cell lines and (2) determine mechanistic actions underlying effects upon leukemia cells using cellular and molecular techniques.
