A new thoron ((220)Rn) experimental room (TER) was established at National Institute of Radiological Sciences in 2011 to respond to the appearance of new passive devices for (220)Rn and its progeny ((212)Pb, (212)Bi) measurement. The room volume is 21.7 m(3) with a low air exchange rate, 0.016 h(-1). Environmental parameters, such as temperature, relative and absolute humidities, wind speed, aerosol distribution and concentration, are monitored, but not controlled. Commercially available lantern mantles (500 pcs), which can generate maximum concentrations of 6000 Bq m(-3) of (220)Rn and 2000 Bq m(-3) of its progeny, are used as a (220)Rn source. Based on preliminary results from the TER, stable and homogenised concentrations of (220)Rn and its progeny can be ensured; therefore, in the near future the room will be used for testing measuring instruments.

Decapod iridovirus 1 (DIV1) poses a major challenge to sustainable shrimp farming and poses a serious hazard to aquaculture industry. This study investigated the complex interaction between DIV1 infection and water temperature, focusing on the effect of high temperature on DIV1 infection due to Penaeus monodon. Using models of latent and acute infection, the study revealed the response of P.

Gas-phase and water-mediated mechanisms for the OCS + OH reaction.

Phys Chem Chem Phys

January 2025

Departamento de Físico-Química, Instituto de Química - Universidade Federal da Bahia, Rua Barão de Jeremoabo, 147, Salvador, Bahia, 40170-115, Brazil.

We report a computational study of the gas-phase and water-mediated mechanisms for the oxidation of carbonyl sulfide (OCS) by the hydroxyl radical. To achieve reliable results, we employ a dual-level strategy within interpolated single-point energies (VTST-ISPE) at the CCSD(T)/aug-cc-pVTZ//M06-2X/aug-cc-pVTZ level of theory. In the gas-phase mechanism, we have determined the rate constants by kinetic Monte Carlo simulation in the interval of temperatures of 250-550 K.

Triaging mammography with artificial intelligence: an implementation study.

Breast Cancer Res Treat

January 2025

Google Health, 1600 Amphitheatre Pkwy, Mountain View, CA, 94043, USA.

Purpose: Many breast centers are unable to provide immediate results at the time of screening mammography which results in delayed patient care. Implementing artificial intelligence (AI) could identify patients who may have breast cancer and accelerate the time to diagnostic imaging and biopsy diagnosis.

Methods: In this prospective randomized, unblinded, controlled implementation study we enrolled 1000 screening participants between March 2021 and May 2022.

Individual vocal identity may be obscured following colony assembly in captive black-capped chickadees.

Black-capped chickadee (Poecile atricapillus) vocalisations remain plastic throughout their lifespans. Although fledglings employ vocal plasticity to refine their vocalisations through the use of tutor mimicry, adults employ vocal plasticity to create unique population dialects. Vocal convergence is one mechanism by which flockmates' vocalisations become increasingly similar to each other and distinct from the calls of other flocks.

Strong precursor softening in cubic CaSiO perovskite.

Proc Natl Acad Sci U S A

February 2025

Department of Earth Sciences, University College London, London WC1E 6BT, United Kingdom.

CaSiO[Formula: see text] perovskite (CaPv) is the last major mineral in the Earth's lower mantle whose elasticity remains largely unresolved. Here, we investigate the elasticity of CaPv using ab initio machine-learning force fields (MLFF). At room temperature, the elasticity of tetragonal CaPv determined by MLFF molecular dynamics (MD) agrees well with experimental measurements after considering temperature induced variations in the hydrostatic structure, proving the effectiveness of the method.
