A nitrospiropyran, which was modified with a cadaverine-derived anchor, was investigated with respect to its thermally induced isomerizations, hydrolytic stability of the merocyanine form, and photochromic ring closure. The host-guest complexation of the anchor by the cucurbit[7]uril macrocycle, evidenced by absorption titration, NMR spectroscopy, and electrospray ionization mass spectrometry, produced significant improvements of the switching properties of the photochrome: 1) appearance of the merocyanine form about 70 times faster, 2) practically unlimited hydrolytic stability of the merocyanine (two and a half days without any measureable decay), and 3) fast, clean, and fatigue-resistant photoinduced ring closure back to the spiro form. The importance of an adequate molecular design of the anchor was demonstrated by including control experiments with spiropyrans with a shorter linker or without such structural asset.

The development of efficient sliding ferroelectric (FE) materials is crucial for advancing next-generation low-power nanodevices. Currently, most efforts focus on homobilayer two-dimensional materials, except for the experimentally reported heterobilayer sliding FE, MoS/WS. Here, we first screened 870 transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) bilayer heterostructures derived from experimentally characterized monolayer TMDs and systematically investigated their sliding ferroelectric behavior across various stacking configurations using high-throughput calculations.

An innovative magnetic immunoassay was developed for the voltammetric detection of carbohydrate antigen-125 (CA-125) on a home-made microfluidic device including a multisyringe pump, selection valve and magneto-controlled detection cell. Two kinds of biofunctionalized nanostructures including anti-CA-125 capture antibody-conjugated magnetic beads and anti-CA-125 detection antibody-labeled silver-polypyrrole (Ag-PPy) nanohybrids were utilized for a sandwiched immunoreaction in the presence of CA-125. With the help of an external magnet, the formed magnetic immunocomplexes were attached to the sensing interface to activate the electrical contact between Ag-PPy nanohybrids and the base electrode, thus resulting in the switching on of the sensor circuit for the generation of voltammetric signals thanks to electroactive Ag-PPy nanohybrids.

Understanding the resistive switching (RS) behavior of oxide-based memory devices at nanoscale is crucial for advancement of high-integration density in-memory computing platforms. This study explores a comprehensive growth parameter space to address the RS behavior of pulsed-laser-deposited substoichiometric TiO (TiO) thin films in search of tailored nanoscale memristors with low-power consumption and high stability. Conductive-atomic-force-microscopy-based measurements facilitate deciphering the switching behavior at nanoscale, providing a direct avenue to understand the microstructure-property relationships.

Ferroelectricity with concomitant Coulomb screening in van der Waals heterostructures.

Nat Nanotechnol

January 2025

State Key Laboratory for Mesoscopic Physics, School of Physics, Peking University, Beijing, China.

Interfacial ferroelectricity emerges in non-centrosymmetric heterostructures consisting of non-polar van der Waals (vdW) layers. Ferroelectricity with concomitant Coulomb screening can switch topological currents or superconductivity and simulate synaptic response. So far, it has only been realized in bilayer graphene moiré superlattices, posing stringent requirements to constituent materials and twist angles.
