Tributyl phosphate (TBP) enhances 238Pu penetration at all stages of its transport in the organism, significantly influences the rates and levels of its cumulation and elimination, the duration of its deposition in organs and tissues. The detected differences indicate the necessity to take them into account in the assessment of danger of exposure to 238Pu in combination with TBP.

Organophosphate esters inhibit enzymatic proteolysis through non-covalent interactions.

Environ Int

January 2025

Institute of Organic Contaminant Control and Soil Remediation, College of Resources and Environmental Sciences, Nanjing Agricultural University, Nanjing, Jiangsu 210095, China. Electronic address:

Enzymatic proteolysis is the key process to produce bioavailable nitrogen in natural terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems for microorganisms and plants. However, little is known on how protein degradation is influenced by organic contaminants. As we known, the overuse of organophosphate esters (OPEs) has caused serious pollution in soil, water, and sediment.

Degradation of organophosphate flame retardants by white-rot fungi: Degradation pathways and associated toxicity.

Sci Total Environ

January 2025

Institut de Química Avançada de Catalunya (IQAC), Spanish Council for Scientific Research (CSIC), Jordi Girona 18-26, 08034 Barcelona, Spain.

The environmental persistence of organophosphate flame retardants (OPFRs) in water is becoming and environmental concern. White Rot Fungi (WRF) have proven its capability to degrade certain OPFRs such as tributyl phosphate (TBP), tris(2-butoxyethyl) phosphate (TBEP), tris(2-chloroethyl) phosphate (TCEP) and tris(2-chloroisopropyl) phosphate (TCPP). Despite this capability, there is limited knowledge about the specific pathways involved in the degradation.

Tributyl phosphate (TBP), an organophosphate ester (OPE), is heavily used as a solvent in chemical industries, a plasticizer, and to extract radioactive molecules. Thus, widespread uses of TBP in industrialized countries led to the release of TBP and its metabolites, dibutyl phosphate (DBP) and monobutyl phosphate (MBP), in the environment and were detected in human samples. Accumulating these OPEs over time in humans and aquatic animals may develop toxicological effects.

Article Synopsis
  • * This study found that indigenous anaerobic microorganisms in soils mainly convert TnBP into dibutyl phosphate (DnBP) through C-O bond cleavage, unlike aerobic conditions which involve P-O bond cleavage, with a specific carbon isotope enrichment factor identified during the process.
  • * The research highlighted key microbial contributors such as Sphingomonans, Nocardioides, and Streptomyces, and how TnBP influences the metabolic functions of these microbes, advancing our understanding of OPE degradation and
