The thermodynamically controlled reactions of water-soluble tetraformylcavitand 2 with two equivalents of H(2)N(CH(2))(n) NH(2) (n=2-4) in the presence of a suitable templating guest give hemicarceplexes 1 a-c⋅guest, the yield of which depends on the match between size and shape of the guest and that of the inner phase. These hemicarceplexes are dynamic and dissociate upon addition of acid and reform upon basification. In water, they exchange guests through temporary hydrolysis of imine bonds. To test 1 b as molecular reaction flask, 3-noradamantyldiazirine 6 was encapsulated and photolyzed at 350 nm to produce Bredt olefin protoadamantene 5 and 1-noradamantyldiazomethane 8 in a 4:1 ratio. Encapsulated protoadamantene is stable for days at room temperature in (CD(3))(2)SO/CD(3)CN (t(1/2) = 5.5 days) and has a lifetime of several minutes in D(2)O.

This review examines the recent advancements and unique properties of polymer-inorganic hybrid materials formed through coordination bonding (Class II hybrids), which enable enhanced functionality and stability across various applications. Here, we categorize these materials based on properties gained through complexation, focusing on electrical conductivity, thermal stability, photophysical characteristics, catalytic activity, and nanoscale self-assembly. Two major synthetic approaches to making these hybrids include homogeneous and heterogeneous methods, each with distinct tradeoffs: Homogeneous synthesis is straightforward but requires favorable mixing between inorganic and polymer species, which are predominantly water-soluble complexes.

Exploring potential third-order nonlinear optical (NLO) materials attracts ever-increasing attention. Given that the atomically precise and rich adjustable structural features of silver nanoclusters (Ag NCs), as well as the unique π-electron conjugated system of carbon-based nanomaterials, a supramolecular co-assembly amplification strategy to enhance the luminescent intensity and NLO performance of the hybrids of the two components, are constructed and the relationship between structures and optical properties are investigated. By combining water soluble Ag NCs [(NH)[Ag(mna)] (Hmna = 2-mercaptonicotinic acid, abbreviated to Ag─NCs hereafter) containing uncoordinated carboxyl groups with water-soluble fullerene derivatives modified with multiple hydroxyl groups (fullerenols, C─OH), the π-electron delocalization is expanded owing to non-covalent hydrogen bonding effect between Ag6─NCs and C─OH, which provides a feasible basis for realizing the NLO response.

Phosphorus-containing fluorophores provide a versatile framework for tailoring photophysical properties, enabling the design of advanced fluorogenic materials for various applications. Boron dipyrromethene (BODIPY) and squaraine dyes are of interest due to their multifaceted modularity and synthetic accessibility. Incorporating phosphorus-based functional groups into BODIPY or squaraine scaffolds has been achieved through a plethora of synthetic methods, including post-dye assembly functionalization.

Amphiphilic bottlebrush block copolymers (BBCs) with tadpole-like, coil-rod architecture can be used to self-assemble into functional polymer nanodiscs directly in water. The hydrophobic segments of the BBC were tuned via the ratio of ethoxy-ethyl glycidyl ether (EE) to tetrahydropyranyl glycidyl ether (TP) within the grafted polymer sidechains. In turn, this variation controlled the sizes, pH-responsiveness, and drug loading capacity of the self-assembled nanodiscs.

A novel aggregation-induced emission (AIE)-based artificial light-harvesting system (LHS) is successfully assembled via the host-guest interaction of bis-naphthylacrylonitrile derivative (BND), water-soluble pillar[5]arene (WP5), and sulforhodamine 101 (SR101). After host-guest assembly, the formed WP5⊃BND complexes spontaneously self-aggregated into WP5⊃BND nanoparticles (donors) and SR101 (acceptors) is introduced into WP5⊃BND to fabricate WP5⊃BND-SR101 LHS. Through the investigation of energy transfer between donors and acceptors, the artificial light-harvesting processes are certified in WP5⊃BND-SR101 LHS and the absolute fluorescence quantum yields (Φ) are significantly improved from 8.
