Objectives: This study assessed the role of oxidative stress in parturition in Omani mothers following growing reports that late preterm neonates were at greater risk than term neonates of perinatal death.

Methods: Venous blood samples were collected during labour, and cord (neonatal) blood samples were taken after childbirth in late preterm and term from women at Sultan Qaboos University Hospital, Oman. Plasma nitric oxide (NO) concentrations, erythrocyte catalase (CAT). Erythrocyte glutathione peroxidase (GPx) activities were measured using spectrophotometric methods.

Results: When compared with term mothers, late preterm mothers had markedly higher NO concentrations (μmol/L) 17.1 ± 3.3 versus 11.0 ± 5.5 (P <0.0001), and lower GPx values (U/g Hb) 94.1 ± 12.9 versus 110.4 ± 12.3 (P <0.0001). Late preterm mothers were significantly younger (P = 0.027) than term mothers and had neonates that weighed significantly less (P <0.0001) than term neonates. GPx activity was significantly reduced (P = 0.001) in late preterm neonates as compared to term neonates. CAT showed no change in activity in any comparison.

Conclusion: Distinctly higher values of NO and lower GPx activity were found in late preterm mothers relative to term mothers; also, lower GPx in late preterm neonates relative to term neonates suggested a pro-oxidant-antioxidant imbalance due to the greater oxidative burden in late preterm parturition.

Perceived Stress During Late Pregnancy and Infant Body Composition at 1 Month.

J Endocr Soc

January 2025

Department of Population and Public Health Sciences, Keck School of Medicine, University of Southern California, Los Angeles, CA 90032, USA.

Context: Worldwide, obesity remains one of the most challenging crises with children being one of the most susceptible populations. The effect of maternal stress during pregnancy on newborn body composition, measured by fat mass and lean mass has, not been extensively studied.

Objectives: We evaluated the association between perceived stress during late pregnancy and infant adiposity at 1 month and assessed effect modification by infant sex and preterm birth.

Introduction: Pregnancy induces a hypercoagulable state, characterized by increased coagulation factors and decreased anticoagulants, alongside ongoing fibrinolysis marked by elevated D-dimer (DD) levels. Reference values for DD in pregnancy often exceed the non-pregnant cutoff due to these changes. Elevated DD levels are common in late pregnancy and may correlate with complications such as gestational diabetes, hypertension, and preterm delivery, particularly in cases of preterm premature rupture of membranes (PPROM).

Introduction Neonatal sepsis is defined as a systemic illness caused by bacteria, viruses, or fungi, characterized by hemodynamic abnormalities and clinical findings that result in morbidity and mortality. Neonatal morbidity and mortality are significantly influenced by neonatal sepsis. Causative pathogens and antimicrobial sensitivity profiles have changed over time, with significant geographic variation.

Introduction: Fusion of mononucleated cytotrophoblasts into syncytium leads to trophoblast senescence. Yet, premature senescence is associated with preeclampsia, fetal growth restriction (FGR), and related obstetrical syndromes. A set of 28 transcripts that comprise senescence-associated secretory phenotype (SASP) was recently described in placentas from women with preeclampsia.
