Fluoroquinolone resistance in Streptococcus pneumoniae has become a growing concern. Using S. pneumoniae isolates (n = 61) for which the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of levofloxacin was not less than 1 μg/ml, we investigated the susceptibility of S. pneumoniae isolates to other fluoroquinolones (ciprofloxacin, pazufloxacin, moxifloxacin, garenoxacin, and sitafloxacin) and sequenced the quinolone resistance-determining regions of two topoisomerase genes, parC and gyrA, in these isolates to identify mutations. As the number of missense mutations increased, the MIC values for each drug increased. However, moxifloxacin, garenoxacin, and sitafloxacin showed potent activities against the isolates, while the MICs of ciprofloxacin and pazufloxacin were higher than the MICs of levofloxacin.

Background: An emerging theory suggests a link between Alzheimer's disease (AD) and microbial infection. Notably, various microbes have been detected in the post-mortem brains of AD patients and murine models. However, there exists a gap in research concerning the presence and role of microbial infection in the AD retina, which shares common pathogenesis with the brain.

Background: Post-COVID19 syndrome is characterized by signs and symptoms that occur within 3 months of the onset of COVID19 acute phase and last at least 2 months. In the past 3 years, cognitive impairment has frequently been associated with COVID19 with descriptions of attentional, executive, memory, and language disorders. Many studies have assessed these cognitive disturbances using online and telephone tests, often in isolated interviews on a cross-sectional design in high-income countries.

Objective: In the context of the Omicron-induced lockdown in Shanghai, this paper investigated the appeals for assistance by citizens on Weibo, aiming to understand their principal challenges and immediate needs.
Methods: This paper collected Weibo posts ( 1040) containing the keyword "Shanghai Anti-epidemic Help" during the citywide lockdown. The online help requests from Shanghai citizens were analyzed across 7 dimensions, including the help sought, level of urgency, help recipient, the intended beneficiary of the help, expression, position, and emotion.

Background: Institutions of higher education (IHE) have been a focus of SARS-CoV-2 transmission studies but there is limited information on how viral diversity and transmission at IHE changed as the pandemic progressed.
Methods: Here we analyze 3606 viral genomes from unique COVID-19 episodes collected at a public university in Seattle, Washington from September 2020 to September 2022.
Results: Across the study period, we found evidence of frequent viral transmission among university affiliates with 60% (n = 2153) of viral genomes from campus specimens genetically identical to at least one other campus specimen.

Background: Ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) is one of the most lethal complications in intensive care unit (ICU) patients. However, critical issues of non-survivors vary and are still unclear in VAP patients.
Methods: The clinical differences between survivors and non-survivors of VAP were retrospectively analyzed in patients hospitalized from April 2023 to March 2024.
