Comparative embryology of the carotid body.

Vertebrate carotid bodies and related structures (branchial arch oxygen chemoreceptors in fishes, carotid labyrinth in amphibians, chemoreceptors in the wall of the common carotid and its branches in birds) develop in embryos when neural crest cells, blood vessels, and nerve fibers from sympathetic and cranial nerve ganglia invade mesenchymal primordia in the wall of the 3rd branchial arch. This review focuses on literature published since the 1970s investigating similarities and differences in the embryological development of 3rd arch oxygen chemoreceptors, especially between mammals and birds, but also considering reptiles, amphibians and fishes.

Acute suppurative thyroiditis (AST), a rare yet potentially life-threatening infection, comprises less than 1 % of neck pathologies and requires prompt treatment. Symptoms range from neck pain and fever to dysphagia and possible abscess formation. Broad-spectrum antibiotics are the primary treatment; however, surgical drainage may be necessary for abscesses to prevent systemic infection.

A new species of beardfish, genus , is described based on three specimens collected in Taiwanese waters and off the Chesterfield Islands of New Caledonia. It can be distinguished from its congeners by the following characters: dorsal-fin rays IV-V, 35-37; gill rakers on outer face of first gill arch 3+1+6=10; scales row between dorsal-fin origin and lateral line vertically 6-8 (S1) and posteriorly 12-14 (S2); pyloric caeca 40; snout rounded, with its surface rough and gelatinous, its tip evidently protrude anterior margin of premaxilla; ctenii on body scales arranged in a wedge-shape, forming three rows; 4 anal-fin spine long, 1.0%-1.

Lineage labeling with zebrafish Cre and CreERT2 recombinase CRISPR knock-ins.

Background: The ability to generate endogenous Cre recombinase drivers using CRISPR-Cas9 knock-in technology allows lineage tracing, cell type specific gene studies, and validation of inferred developmental trajectories from phenotypic and gene expression analyses. This report describes endogenous zebrafish Cre and CreERT2 drivers generated with GeneWeld CRISPR-Cas9 precision targeted integration.

Results: and knock-ins crossed with ubiquitous -based Switch reporters led to broad labeling in expected mesodermal and neural crest-derived lineages in cardiac, pectoral fins, pharyngeal arch, liver, intestine, and mesothelial tissues, as well as enteric neurons.
