Published: October 2013

Objective: To achieve greater motivation for behavioural changes; educating, motivating and supporting the patient's ability to change lifestyle factors related to the caries disease are important tasks in the prevention of the disease. The aim of this study was to evaluate whether a visual aid (Visual Caries Dialogue, VCD) in combination with a comprehensive open discussion has a beneficial effect on approximal caries development among a population of young adolescents.

Materials And Methods: The study subjects were randomized to either an intervention group (n = 118), where VCD was conducted, or a control group (n = 112) receiving traditional oral healthcare information, at the annual dental health examination. The number of caries lesions reaching through the entire enamel (D2) and dentin caries reaching through the enamel into the dentin (D3) were recorded from bitewing radiographs each year, from 2001-2004. Differences between the study groups regarding at least two new approximal surfaces with caries (D2-D3) were tested using logistic regression.

Results: The caries increment was lower in the intervention group compared to the control group. During the 3-year follow-up, 18 (15.3%) patients in the intervention group and 40 (35.7%) patients in the control group demonstrated a DS-approximal increment of at least two surfaces with a risk ratio of 2.34 (95% CI = 1.43-3.83).

Conclusion: Visual Caries Dialogue in combination with a comprehensive open discussion reduced approximal caries increment among young individuals. The method provides an innovative simple and low-cost way of delivering information to patients and guides busy dental healthcare personnel in the approach.

Purpose: To evaluate the oral health status of community-dwellers ≥ 45 years of age in the canton of Bern, Switzerland.

Materials And Methods: Data were collected using a questionnaire (including sociodemographic factors, medical history, oral health behaviour) and a clinical examination comprising caries, periodontal disease, oral hygiene, and prosthetic rehabilitation. χ2/Fisher's tests and Cochrane Armitage trend tests as well as a binary logistic regression were performed to assess the association between oral disease presence (i.

Objectives: Approximal caries diagnosis in children is difficult, and artificial intelligence-based research in pediatric dentistry is scarce. To create a convolutional neural network (CNN)-based diagnostic system for the prompt and efficient identification of approximal caries in pediatric patients aged 5-12 years.

Materials And Methods: Pediatric patients' digital periapical radiographic images were collected to create a unique dataset.

Objective: To evaluate the influence of the (undergraduate) operator on the survival and success rate of posterior partial lithium disilicate restorations.

Materials And Methods: Patients who received at least one posterior partial lithium disilicate restoration between 2009 and 2019 by undergraduates at the Center for Dentistry and Oral Hygiene in Groningen were included. Operator- (academic year (4th, 5th, 6th year)), patient- (presence of a nightguard, caries risk, age), tooth- (endodontic status, inlay/onlay, position of the restoration outline) and material-related factors (cement type, rubber dam use, Immediate Dentin Sealing) on the survival and success rate were analyzed using multilevel Cox regression (p < 0.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study aimed to evaluate how different monitor types and lighting conditions affect the accuracy and duration of diagnosing approximal caries from bitewing radiographs.
  • - Results showed no significant difference in diagnostic accuracy or duration, but factors like ambient light, clinical experience, and the severity of caries did impact the level of confidence in diagnoses.
  • - Overall, the findings suggest that while monitor type and lighting don't affect accuracy, they, along with other factors, influence how confident practitioners feel about their diagnoses of caries.

Article Synopsis
  • The study examines the effectiveness of three different matrix systems—Tofflemire, Garrison, and Bioclear—used for Class II composite restorations in premolars and molars, focusing on their ability to create tight proximal contacts and proper contours.
  • Using FDI criteria, the researchers conducted evaluations immediately after restoration placement, employing methods such as flossing and radiographic examination to assess the contact quality and marginal gaps.
  • Statistical analysis indicated significant differences among the matrix systems in terms of the quality of proximal contact and contour, with results processed using SPSS and significance level set at p < 0.05.
