Objective: To survey the metabolic status of the middle-aged and aged population with periodontitis in Shijingshan community of Beijing, and investigate the relationship between periodontitis and metabolic syndrome (MS).

Methods: The middle-aged and aged population in the community were investigated by questionnaires, periodontal clinical examinations and blood biochemical tests in 2005. A total of 903 subjects were enrolled, who were divided into two groups by severity of periodontitis. Their waist circumferences, values of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), systolic blood pressure, fasting glucose, MS and its individual components (central obesity, insulin resistance, hypertriglyceridemia, low HDL-C and hypertension) were compared between the two groups. The Logistic regression model was set to analyze the relationship between periodontitis and MS.

Results: There was a significantly higher mean of systolic blood pressure, fasting glucose in the subjects with moderate-severe periodontitis than that with no-mild periodontitis. With severity of periodontitis increasing, the prevalence of MS, high blood glucose and low HDL-C increased significantly. After adjustment for gender, age, and smoking, the subjects with moderate-severe periodontitis were 1.524, 1.527 and 2.349 times more likely to suffer from MS, high blood glucose and low HDL-C than those with no-mild periodontitis, respectively.

Conclusion: With severity of periodontitis increasing, the prevalence of MS, high blood glucose and low HDL-C increased significantly in the middle-aged and aged population of the community in Beijing. Severity of periodontitis is associated with MS, high blood glucose and low HDL-C.

Background: Dyslipidemia, a leading risk factor for cardiovascular diseases (CVDs), significantly contributes to global morbidity and mortality. Rice bran, rich in bioactive compounds such as γ-oryzanol and tocotrienols, has demonstrated promising lipid-modulating effects.

Objective: This meta-analysis aimed to evaluate the effects of rice bran on lipid profiles, including triglycerides (TG), total cholesterol (TC), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), and identify factors influencing its efficacy across different populations and intervention conditions.

High-selenium exposure is associated with modulation of serum lipid metabolism.

Ecotoxicol Environ Saf

January 2025

Hubei Selenium and Human Health Institute, the Central Hospital of Enshi Tujia and Miao Autonomous Prefecture, Enshi 445000, China; Hubei Provincial Key Lab of Selenium Resources and Bioapplications, Enshi 445000, China. Electronic address:

At present, there is no consensus on the relationship between selenium (Se) exposure and human serum lipid metabolism. The etiological role of high-Se exposure in lipid markers, dyslipidemia, and nonalcoholic fatty liver (NAFLD) remains unclear. We used serum untargeted metabolomics analysis to evaluate whether high-Se exposure is cross-sectionally associated with lipid metabolism in adults from high-Se exposure area (n = 112) and control area (n = 101) in Hubei Province, China.

Department of Urology, Affiliated Haikou Hospital of Central South University Xiangya Medical School, Central South University, Changsha, Hunan, 410011, China; Department of Urology, the Third People's Hospital of Haikou, Hainan, 570100, China. Electronic address:

Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is a prevalent condition associated with male lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) and is influenced by metabolic syndrome (MetS) and gut microbiota. Akkermansia muciniphila (AKK) is a gut commensal that has emerged as a potential modulator of metabolic health and inflammatory conditions. This study investigated the correlation between Akkermansia abundance and BPH severity and metabolic indices in fecal and serum samples from BPH patients and healthy donors using 16S rRNA sequencing and metabolic profiling.

Dyslipidemia, a significant risk factor for cardiovascular disease (CVD), is marked by abnormal lipid levels, such as the elevated lowering of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C). Statins are the first-line treatment for LDL-C reduction. Pitavastatin (PIT) has shown potential in lowering LDL-C and improving high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C).
