The mineral content of cancellous bone from sheep and pig vertebral bodies was determined by ashing at 800 degrees C. The results were compared with published results for human vertebral cancellous bone. The results for sheep (0.37 +/- 0.06 gcm(-3), mean +/- standard deviation) were not significantly different (p = 0.127) to those from pigs (0.33 +/- 0.03 gcm(-3)). The results from both species were significantly higher (p < 0.001) than those from human bones (0.15 +/- 0.02 gcm(-3)). This means that cancellous bone from sheep and pig vertebral bodies is not a good model for corresponding human bone. However, sheep and pig bone are useful, for example, for providing stringent tests of cutting instruments to be used in human spinal surgery.

The first marine pestivirus, Phocoena pestivirus (PhoPeV), isolated from harbor porpoise, has been recently described. To further characterize this unique pestivirus, its host cell tropism and growth kinetics were determined in different cell lines. In addition, the interaction of PhoPeV with innate immunity in porcine epithelial cells and the role of selected cellular factors involved in the viral entry and RNA replication of PhoPeV were investigated in comparison to closely and distantly related pestiviruses.

Cystic echinococcosis (CE) is a neglected tropical parasitic disease linked with significant social and economic burdens worldwide. The scientific community has minimal information on echinococcosis in Romanian people, and hospital medical records are the only sources that may be used to investigate its status. A 7-year retrospective clinical study on pediatric patients with CE from Southeast Romania was performed, and 39 children and adolescents were included, aged 2-15 years old.

The major hurdle of xenotransplantation is the immune response triggered by human natural antibodies interacting with carbohydrate antigens on the transplanted animal organ. Specifically, terminal glycoprotein motifs such as galactose-α1,3-galactose (α-Gal) and N-glycolylneuraminic acid (Neu5Gc) are significant obstacles. Little is known about the abundance and compositions of asparagine-linked complex carbohydrates (N-glycans) carrying these motifs in mammalian organs.

Quantitative trait loci (QTL) are genomic regions that influence essential traits in livestock. Understanding QTL distribution and density across species' genomes is crucial for animal genetics research. This study explored the QTLome of cattle, pigs, sheep, and chickens by analyzing QTL distribution and evaluating the correlation between QTL, gene density, and chromosome size with the aim to identify QTL-enriched genomic regions.

Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV) is regarded as an emerging and reemerging pathogen that is a primary cause of viral encephalitis in humans. However, there is a scarcity of research on the prevalence of JEV genotypes across the different mosquito species in Shanghai. In this study, the diversity of mosquito species and prevalence of JEV in pig and sheep farms in Shanghai were surveyed in 2022.
