Objectives: The root barks of Periploca sepium Bge. (P. sepium) has been used in traditional Chinese medicine for healing wounds and treating rheumatoid arthritis. However, toxicity in high-doses was often diagnosed by the presence of many glycosides. The potential mutagenicity of P. sepium was investigated both in vitro and in vivo.

Methods: This was examined by the bacterial reverse mutation (Ames) test using Escherichia coli WP2uvrA and Salmonella typhimurium strains, such as TA98, TA100, TA1535, and TA1537. Chromosomal aberrations were investigated using Chinese hamster lung cells, and the micronucleus test using mice.

Results: P. sepium did not induce mutagenicity in the bacterial test or chromosomal aberrations in Chinese hamster lung cells, although metabolic activation and micronucleated polychromatic erythrocytes were seen in the mice bone marrow cells.

Conclusions: Considering these results, it is suggested that P. sepium does not have mutagenic potential under the conditions examined in each study.

Study on Shear Strength of Soil-Root Systems of Different Vegetation Types.

Plants (Basel)

October 2024

College of Water Conservancy and Transportation, Zhengzhou University, Zhengzhou 450001, China.

The root systems of vegetation significantly contribute to enhancing slope stability. The shear strength of soil-root systems is a crucial parameter for assessing slope stability. This study focuses on six types of vegetation in the Yellow River Basin of China (woodland: and ; shrubland: and ; grassland: and ), employing in situ shear tests and the Wu-Waldron model (Wu model) to investigate the shear strength of soil-root systems.

C steroidal glycosides from the root bark of and their NO production inhibitory and cytotoxic activity.

Nat Prod Res

November 2024

Institute of Traditional Chinese Medicine and Natural Products, College of Pharmacy/Guangdong Province Key Laboratory of Pharmacodynamic Constituents of TCM and New Drugs Research, Jinan University, Guangzhou, China.

A series of C steroidal glycosides were isolated from the root bark of , including a new compound, perisepiumoside A1 (), and six known compounds (). Their structures were elucidated by analysis of HR-ESI-MS, and 1D and 2D NMR spectroscopic data. All these compounds were tested for their NO production inhibitory activity in LPS-stimulated RAW 264.

Background: Periplocoside P (PSP) is a major component of Periploca sepium Bunge known for its potent insecticidal activity. V-Type adenosine triphosphatase (V-ATPase), which is widely distributed in the cytoplasmic membranes and organelles of eukaryotic cells, plays a crucial role in synaptic excitability conduction. Previous research has shown that PSP targets the apical membrane of goblet cells in the insect midgut.
