Published: September 2012

An efficient process for converting N-acetyglucosamine (NAG) into 3-acetamido-5-acetylfuran (3A5AF) is reported. 3A5AF is proposed as an N-containing platform chemical, which contains renewable nitrogen. In the reported method NAG, in the presence of boric acid (B(OH)₃) and sodium chloride (NaCl), produces 58 % yield 3A5AF in dimethylacetamide under microwave irradiation (220 °C, 15 min). A maximum yield of 62 % was obtained in the presence of 4 equivalent NaCl. Performing ICP-MS analysis on NAG from different chemical suppliers highlighted the importance of Cl and B levels in this process. Trace impurities are, therefore, important considerations in biomass transformations. This solution-phase process produces approximately 30 times more 3A5AF than a pyrolysis route reported previously.

The controlled formation and stabilization of nanoparticles is of fundamental relevance for materials science and key to many modern technologies. Common synthetic strategies to arrest growth at small sizes and prevent undesired particle agglomeration often rely on the use of organic additives and require non-aqueous media and/or high temperatures, all of which appear critical with respect to production costs, safety, and sustainability. In the present work, we demonstrate a simple one-pot process in water under ambient conditions that can produce particles of various transition metal carbonates and sulfides with sizes of only a few nanometers embedded in a silica shell, similar to particles derived from more elaborate synthesis routes, like the sol-gel process.

We have developed a simple and straightforward synthesis of chiral -imidazolidinone cyclohexenones, featuring six contiguous stereocenters, from feedstock chemicals such as aminophenols, α,β-unsaturated aldehydes, and α-amino acids. Remarkably, this one-pot multicomponent reaction exhibits exceptional diastereoselectivity (>20:1 dr) and relies solely on an amino acid precursor as the chiral source, avoiding the use of transition metals or additional organocatalysts. This reaction is efficient and scalable, enabling synthesis on a gram-scale.

Conductive hydrogels are utilized in flexible sensors due to their high-water content, excellent elasticity, and shape controllability. However, the sharp increase in resistance of this material under enormous strain leads to instability in the sensing process. This study presents a straightforward method for creating a stable, recyclable, hybrid ionic-electronic conductive (HIEC) hydrogel via a simple one-pot strategy using polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), bagasse cellulose nanofibrils (CNF), and graphene(G) with sodium dodecylbenzene sulfonate (SDBS).

Electronic address:

Periodontitis is a highly prevalent oral disease characterized by bacterial-induced hyperactivation of the host immune system, leading to a sustained inflammatory response and osteoclastic activity, which ultimately results in periodontal destruction. In this work, an immunomodulatory supramolecular hydrogel for the topical treatment of periodontitis was synthesized using a simple one-pot method. This phenylboronate ester-based 8AGPB hydrogel exhibited excellent stability, self-healing properties, injectability, and biocompatibility.

A synthesis of a small library of fluorescent 1,4-dihydropyridine nucleoside analogues has been successfully carried out under solvent-free conditions a one-pot three-component Hantzsch condensation reaction. The process involved a Ba(NO) catalyzed solvent-free reaction between 3',5'-di--acetyl-5-formyl-2'-deoxyuridine, differently substituted β-keto ester and ammonium acetate under microwave irradiation. This facile methodology yielded the desired products with very high yields (86-96%) under solvent-free reaction conditions in a short reaction time, which was followed by a simple workup.
