Alternative networks of non-pumped wells filled with reactive media were evaluated for groundwater remediation capability. Wells were screened across the saturated zone of a simulated, unconfined aquifer with a heterogeneous hydraulic conductivity. A numerical mass transport model generated an initial contaminant plume and then simulated its movement through different networks of non-pumped wells. Two cases were investigated: (1) a linear transect of wells downgradient of the plume; and (2) a downgradient linear transect combined with a second linear transect crossing the plume's interior. Several simulations were conducted for each case to determine the smallest number of wells necessary to prevent the plume from traveling offsite. Case 2 required 11% more wells, but reduced cleanup time by 21%.

Six sandy beaches located on the south coast of Viti-Levu, Fiji, were sampled to provide as a first aim, an environmental description based upon their physical and biological attributes, to serve as a reference tool for further monitoring programs. Beach face slopes were measured at 4 replicated transects stretching from the front dunes or the seaward reach of the tree vegetation (upper shore level) to the low tide level. Samples for analyses of sand particle size were collected at 4 tidal levels: the upper shore, the drift and effluent lines, and the low tide level.

This study proposes a novel approach to determine whether farmers act as a pollution source of microplastics through macroplastic mismanagement or if they are temporary hosts of in-transit microplastics. Using a case-study approach, it was hypothesized that 90 % of soil microplastics would trace back to macroplastic waste mismanaged by farmers.
