The gastropod Patella vulgata is abundant on rocky shores in Northern Europe and a significant grazer of intertidal algae. Here we report the application of Illumina sequencing to develop a transcriptome from the adult mantle tissue of P. vulgata. We obtained 47,237,104 paired-end reads of 51 bp, trialled de novo assembly methods and settled on the additive multiple K method followed by redundancy removal as resulting in the most comprehensive assembly. This yielded 29,489 contigs of at least 500 bp in length. We then used three methods to search for candidate genes relevant to biomineralisation: searches via BLAST and Hidden Markov Models for homologues of biomineralising genes from other molluscs, searches for predicted proteins containing tandem repeats and searches for secreted proteins that lacked a transmembrane domain. From the results of these searches we selected 15 contigs for verification by RT-PCR, of which 14 were successfully amplified and cloned. These included homologues of Pif-177/BSMP, Perlustrin, SPARC, AP24, Follistatin-like and Carbonic anhydrase, as well as three containing extensive G-X-Y repeats as found in nacrein. We selected two for further verification by in situ hybridisation, demonstrating expression in the larval shell field. We conclude that de novo assembly of Illumina data offers a cheap and rapid route to a predicted transcriptome that can be used as a resource for further biological study.

The present study explores the x-box binding protein 1 (xbp1) gene in Haliotis discus hannai (Pacific abalone), focusing on its structure, expression, and functional role under heat stress. Southern blot revealed two copies of xbp1 in the intestine and mantle, one in the gill and muscle, and no detection in the digestive gland. mRNA expression levels were highest in the gill, followed by the mantle, intestine, and muscle, with the digestive gland showing the lowest expression.

Many contaminants from scattered sources constantly endanger streams that flow through heavily inhabited areas, commercial districts, and industrial hubs. The responses of transplanted mussels in streams in active biomonitoring programs will reflect the dynamics of environmental stream conditions. This study evaluated the untargeted metabolomic and proteomic responses and free radical scavenging activities of transplanted mussels Sinanodonta woodiana in the Winongo Stream at three stations (S1, S2, S3) representing different pollution levels: low (S1), high (S2), and moderate (S3).

Mantle cell lymphoma (MCL) is a rare, highly invasive non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. The main pathogenesis of MCL is associated with the formation of the IgH/CCND1 fusion gene and nuclear overexpression of cyclin D1, which accelerates the cell cycle, leading to tumorigenesis. The prognosis with current standard chemotherapy is still unsatisfactory.

Cell adhesion is warranted by proteins that are crucial for the maintenance of tissue integrity and homeostasis. Most of these proteins behave as receptors to link adhesion to the control of cell survival and their expression or regulation are often altered in cancers. B-cell malignancies do not evade this principle as they are sustained in relapsed niches by interacting with the microenvironment that includes cells and their secreted factors.
