Objective: This retrospective cohort study was conducted to investigate the influence of wearing dentures in the initial occurrence site of bisphosphonate-related osteonecrosis of the jaws (BRONJ).

Study Design: A questionnaire regarding the prevalence, therapy, and outcome of jawbone lesions during 2006-08 was mailed to 248 medical institutions with an oral and maxillofacial surgery department in Japan.

Results: Ninety-nine patients wearing dentures had significantly shorter duration until occurrence than 151 patients not wearing dentures. In addition, remission of BRONJ affecting the mandibular canine and premolar region in denture-wearing patients was significantly more difficult. Poor oral hygiene status was found to affect significantly the prognosis of BRONJ in denture-wearing patients. Alcohol habit also delayed remission, but high body mass index promoted remission.

Conclusion: Wearing a denture in the initial occurrence site of BRONJ was shown to influence the prognosis of BRONJ, especially in mandibular denture-wearing patients.

With mines extending deeper and rising surface temperatures, workers are exposed to hotter environments. This study aimed to characterize heat stress and strain in the Canadian mining industry and evaluate the utility of the Heat Strain Score Index (HSSI), combined with additional self-reported adverse health outcomes. An exploratory web-based survey was conducted among workers ( = 119) in the Canadian mining industry.

Background: Patients receiving chiropractic spinal manipulation (CSM) for spinal pain are less likely to be prescribed opioids, and some evidence suggests that these patients have a lower risk of any type of adverse drug event. We hypothesize that adults receiving CSM for sciatica will have a reduced risk of opioid-related adverse drug events (ORADEs) over a one-year follow-up compared to matched controls not receiving CSM.

Methods: We searched a United States (US) claims-based data resource (Diamond Network, TriNetX, Inc.

Background: Clinicians often start unnecessarily broad-spectrum empiric Gram-negative antibiotics out of the concern that delaying effective therapy could lead to a worse clinical outcome. This study examined the consequences of delayed initiation of broad-spectrum Gram-negative antibiotics.

Methods: In a retrospective cohort of adult inpatients from 928 US hospitals, we compared clinical outcomes after (1) empiric narrow-spectrum antibiotics escalated to broad-spectrum antibiotics (delayed broad-spectrum therapy, DBT) and (2) empiric broad-spectrum antibiotics continued for at least 5 days (early broad-spectrum therapy, EBT) using Win Ratios.
