This study clarified the suitability of fishes caught from illegal fish farms to human consumption and their hazards to public health. For this purpose, the concentrations of some metals (Al, Cd, Pb, Hg and Ni) in water and Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) fish samples collected from an illegal fish farm, in addition to pathological conditions of the fish tissues, were examined. The illegal farm water was found to be heavily polluted with metals which far exceeded the permissible limits. It was found that metals accumulated in tissues of O. niloticus in concentrations higher than those of farm water. Kidney of O. niloticus contained the highest concentrations of the detected metals, while muscle and skin contained the lowest concentrations. The examination of fish tissues revealed various histopathological lesions which related directly to the pollution of the illegal farm water. Moreover, metals levels in O. niloticus muscle were higher than the maximum permissible levels for human consumption. Consequently, the flesh of fishes from the illegal farms could be considered hazardous to human health. Therefore, warning against eating fish caught from the illegal fish farms should be announced. Moreover, removal of such illegal fish farms is necessary for the public health protection.

The European sardine () ranks among the most valuable species of Iberian fisheries, and the accurate tracing of its geographic origin, once landed, is paramount to securing sustainable management of fishing stocks and discouraging fraudulent practices of illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing. The present study investigated the potential use of white muscle fatty acids (FAs) to successfully discriminate the geographic origin of samples obtained in seven commercially important fishing harbors along the Iberian Atlantic Coast. While 35 FAs were identified using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry in the white muscle of , the following, as determined by the Boruta algorithm, were key for sample discrimination: 14:0, 22:6-3, 22:5-3, 18:0, 20:5-3, 16:1-7, 16:0, and 18:1-7 (in increasing order of relevance).

The capacity for a non-native species to become invasive largely hinges on existing dispersal capacity or adaptation of dispersal in new environments. Here we provide early evidence that invasive Northern Pike (Esox lucius), a Holarctic freshwater top predator, illegally introduced in the late 1950s into Southcentral Alaska, are now dispersing through estuarine corridors. This finding represents the first known documentation of estuary use and dispersal by Northern Pike in North America, exacerbating conservation concerns for already depressed populations of culturally and economically important species such as salmonids.
