Morphological and molecular phylogeny of sp. (Digenea: Clinostomidae) metacercariae, using DNA barcode from a South American freshwater fish.

J Helminthol

January 2025

Universidade Federal de Alagoas (UFAL), Instituto de Ciências Biológicas e da Saúde, Departamento de Patologia e Parasitologia, Maceió, Alagoas, Brasil.

Here, we present a comprehensive morphological and molecular phylogenetic analysis of sp. (Digenea: Clinostomidae) metacercariae parasitizing two freshwater fish species from Southeast Brazil: (piranha) and (tambuatá). The morphological examination revealed distinct characteristics of metacercariae in each host.

Resistance-breaking strains of tomato spotted wilt virus hamper photosynthesis and protein synthesis pathways in a virus accumulation-dependent manner in Sw5-carrying tomatoes.

Sci Rep

January 2025

Istituto per la Protezione Sostenibile delle Piante, Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche, via Amendola 165/A, 70126, Bari, Italy.

Tomato spotted wilt virus (TSWV; Orthotospovirus tomatomaculae) is one of the major horticultural threats due to its worldwide distribution and broad host range. In Italy, TSWV is widely spread in tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) crops and causes severe yield losses. In the last decades, several tomato varieties carrying the Sw-5b gene for resistance to TSWV have been released.

Objective: This study aims to explore the role of estrogen in providing cardioprotective benefits to premenopausal women, examining how hormonal differences between sexes influence the prevalence of cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) in women.

Materials And Methods: Eighteen female Wistar rats were equally distributed into three treatment groups. Animals in Group I (sham-operated) and Group II (ovariectomized [OVX]) received oral saline solution at a dose of 2 mL/kg.

Objective: To assess the genotypic and allelic distribution of the rs10046 polymorphism in the gene and evaluate whether this aromatase gene variant is associated with cardiovascular risk in postmenopausal women.

Materials And Methods: This cross-sectional study analyzed repository-stored samples from 370 postmenopausal women aged 44-72 years. Clinical, metabolic, and hormonal data were collected.

Exploring diazotrophic diversity: unveiling Nif core distribution and evolutionary patterns in nitrogen-fixing organisms.

BMC Genomics

January 2025

Laboratory of Artificial Intelligence Applied to Bioinformatics, Professional and Technical Education Sector - SEPT, UFPR, Curitiba, Paraná, Brazil.

Background: Diazotrophs carry out biological nitrogen fixation (BNF) using the nitrogenase enzyme complex (NEC), which relies on nitrogenase encoded by nif genes. Horizontal gene transfer (HGT) and gene duplications have created significant diversity among these genes, making it challenging to identify potential diazotrophs. Previous studies have established a minimal set of Nif proteins, known as the Nif core, which includes NifH, NifD, NifK, NifE, NifN, and NifB.
