Meiosis is a critical process in sexual reproduction, and errors during this cell division can significantly impact fertility. Successful meiosis relies on the coordinated action of numerous genes involved in DNA replication, strand breaks, and subsequent rejoining. DNA topoisomerase enzymes play a vital role by regulating DNA topology, alleviating tension during replication and transcription.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFMuch evidence from biological theory and empirical data indicates that, gene trees, phylogenetic trees reconstructed from different genes (loci), do not have to have exactly the same tree topologies. Such incongruence between gene trees might be caused by some "unusual" evolutionary events, such as meiotic sexual recombination in eukaryotes or horizontal transfers of genetic material in prokaryotes. However, most of the gene trees are constrained by the tree topology of the underlying species tree, that is, the phylogenetic tree depicting the evolutionary history of the set of species under consideration.

Satellite DNA (satDNA) consists of sequences of DNA that form tandem repetitions across the genome, and it is notorious for its diversity and fast evolutionary rate. Despite its importance, satDNA has been only sporadically studied in reptile lineages. Here, we sequenced genomic DNA and PCR-amplified microdissected W chromosomes on the Illumina platform in order to characterize the monomers of satDNA from the Henkel's leaf-tailed gecko and to compare their topology by in situ hybridization in the karyotypes of the closely related Günther's flat-tail gecko and gold dust day gecko .

In higher eukaryotes, meiotic chromosome function, and therefore fertility, requires cohesin complexes containing meiosis-specific kleisin subunits: REC8 and RAD21L in mammals and REC-8 and COH-3/4 in . How these complexes perform the multiple functions of cohesin during meiosis and whether this involves different modes of DNA binding or dynamic association with chromosomes is poorly understood.

Type II DNA topoisomerases regulate topology by double-stranded DNA cleavage and ligation. The TopoVI family of DNA topoisomerase, first identified and biochemically characterized in Archaea, represents, with TopoVIII and mini-A, the type IIB family. TopoVI has several intriguing features in terms of function and evolution.
