Both exploration and explicit instruction are thought to benefit learning in many ways, but much less is known about how the two can be combined. We tested the hypothesis that engaging in exploratory activities prior to receiving explicit instruction better prepares children to learn from the instruction. Children (159 second- to fourth-grade students) solved relatively unfamiliar mathematics problems (e.g., 3+5=4+□) before or after they were instructed on the concept of mathematical equivalence. Exploring problems before instruction improved understanding compared with a more conventional "instruct-then-practice" sequence. Prompts to self-explain did not improve learning more than extra practice. Microgenetic analyses revealed that problem exploration led children to more accurately gauge their competence, attempt a larger variety of strategies, and attend more to problem features-better preparing them to learn from instruction.

At the York College of Pennsylvania, Jenna Davis is an assistant professor. She serves as the course coordinator for the Basic Principles course and teaches in the NCLEX support course. Carrie Pucino is an associate professor at York College of Pennsylvania. She has served as a leader in developing and improving the York College NCLEX Preparation Program, revising and teaching in the NCLEX support course, and providing one-to-one NCLEX coaching for high-risk students.
Purpose: To explore perceptions of student learning in undergraduate nursing students who repeat the fundamentals nursing course and simultaneously take a support course.
Methods: This qualitative descriptive design was conducted at one private liberal arts college. The study included interviews with six undergraduate baccalaureate nursing students repeating the fundamentals course and their perceptions following the repeated course.
AI has changed the landscape of health professions education. With the hype now behind us, we find ourselves in the phase of reckoning, considering what's next; where do we start and how can educators use these powerful tools for daily teaching and learning. We recognize the great need for training to use AI meaningfully for education.
