Core-shell structured silica/magnetic nanoparticle composites have recently been subjected to extensive research since the shells could offer protection to the cores and introduce new properties to the hybrid structures, which endue them with great application potentials in various fields. Several approaches have been studied for the synthesis of SiO2 coated on magnetic nanoparticles. These approaches include Stöber process, microemulsion, sodium silicate and tetraethoxysilane hydrolysis, aerosol pyrolysis, layer-by-layer strategy, polymer-templating and sonochemical deposition. This review is focused on describing state-of-the-art synthetic routes and methods for the preparation of silica/magnetic nanoparticle composites. Furthermore, we also introduce main applications of these nanoparticle composites in biomedical scopes and address some challenges in the synthesis of high-quality magnetic nanoparticles.

Experimental and theoretical studies on the compositional changes of new particle formation in the nucleation and initial growth stages of acid-base systems (2 and 5 nm) are extremely challenging. This study proposes a machine learning method for predicting the composition change of the sulfuric acid-dimethylamine system in the transformation from monomer to nanoparticle by learning the structure and composition information on small-sized sulfuric acid (SA)-dimethylamine (DMA) molecular clusters. Based on this method and changes in components, we found that the sulfuric acid-dimethylamine growth was mainly through the alternate adsorption of (SA)(DMA), (SA)(DMA), and (SA) clusters at the early stage of nucleation, which accounted for about 70, 20, and 10%, respectively.

Synthesizing nanoparticles with controlled shapes has been highly desirable for nanoparticle assembly research but is fraught with challenges. While the production of traditional spherical lignin nanoparticles (LNPs) has evolved as a solution to address the highly changeable and complex chemical structure of lignin, more complicated geometries with photonic nature are still needed for optical applications. This work represents the first study to fabricate a novel triangular lignin photonic crystal nanoparticle via a green technique that combines solvent shifting and acid precipitation.

Carboxymethyl chitosan (CMCS) is identified as a promising polymer for food packaging film owing to its film-forming ability, non-toxicity, and biodegradability. Magnetic fluorescent nanomaterials have broad application prospects as taggants in fields such as anticounterfeiting identification, suspicious object tracking, and potential fingerprint recognition in forensic medicine. It is a common method to synthesize magnetic fluorescent composite nanoparticles by preparing a shell on the surface of magnetic particles to load fluorescent materials. In this work, a magnetic fluorescence nanohybrid was synthesized by in situ encapsulation of carbon quantum dots (CQDs) during the preparation of a SiO shell on the surface of FeO nanoparticles.

Coating synthetic nanoparticles (NPs) with lipid membranes is a promising approach to enhance the performance of nanomaterials in various biological applications, including therapeutic delivery to target organs. Current methods for achieving this coating often rely on bulk approaches which can result in low efficiency and poor reproducibility. Continuous processes coupled with quality control represent an attractive strategy to manufacture products with consistent attributes and high yields.
