Peripheral nerve blocks are common and effective means for anesthesia for limb surgery. The evaluation of the success of a peripheral blockade is based on the loss of sensation, with no objective means of detecting a successful block. The autonomic innervation to the upper extremity, which controls both the vascular tone and the activity of sweat glands, is supplied by nerve fibers accompanying the somatic nerve fibers. Previous studies have shown changes in both skin temperature and electrical resistance of the skin following brachial plexus block. We studied 20 patients undergoing hand surgery under infraclavicular brachial plexus block. The electrical resistance of the skin on the palmar aspect of the forearm was continuously recorded on the block arm and on the contralateral arm using a commercial skin resistance monitor. No statistically significant change in the electrical resistance of the skin was observed during 20 minutes after placement of the block. These results strongly suggest that the electrical resistance of the skin cannot be used to predict a successful infraclavicular block.

Background: In patients with acute hypoxemic respiratory failure (AHRF) under mechanical ventilation, the change in pressure slope during a low-flow insufflation indicates a global airway opening pressure (AOP) needed to reopen closed airways and may be used for titration of positive end-expiratory pressure.
Objectives: To understand 1) if airways open homogeneously inside the lungs or significant regional AOP variations exist; 2) whether the pattern of the pressure slope change during low-flow insufflation can indicate the presence of regional AOP variations.
Methods: Using electrical impedance tomography, we recorded low-flow insufflation maneuvers (< 10 L/min) starting from end-expiratory positive pressure 0-5 cmHO.

The low-frequency resistance fluctuations, or noise, in electrical resistance not only set a performance benchmark in devices but also form a sensitive tool to probe nontrivial electronic phases and band structures in solids. Here, we report the measurement of such noise in the electrical resistance in twisted bilayer graphene (tBLG), where the layers are misoriented close to the magic angle (θ ∼ 1°). At high temperatures ( ≳ 60-70 K), the power spectral density (PSD) of the fluctuation inside the low-energy moiré bands is predominantly ∝1/, where is the frequency, being generally lowest close to the magic angle, and can be well-explained within the conventional McWhorter model of the '1/ noise' with trap-assisted density-mobility fluctuations.

We study the influence of electrical biasing on the modification of the chemical composition and electrical performance of perovskite solar cells (PSCs) by coupling electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and scanning transmission X-ray microscopy (STXM) techniques. EIS reveals the formation of charge accumulation at the interfaces and changes in the resistive and capacitive properties. STXM study on PSCs after applying a strong electric field for a long biasing time indicates the breakdown of methylammonium (MA) cation, promoting iodide ions to migrate and create defects at the interface.
