Although brief alcohol interventions have proven effective in a variety of health care settings, the present article describes the development of the first brief intervention for heavy drinkers in dental practice. Elements of motivational interviewing and personalized normative feedback were incorporated in a 3- to 5-minute intervention delivered by dental hygienists. The intervention is guided by a one-page feedback report providing personalized normative feedback regarding the patient's current oral health practices, their drinking in comparison to others, and oral cancer risk associated with current smoking and drinking. Future publications will present data regarding intervention effectiveness from an ongoing randomized trial.

The investigation focused on Tl, Hg, As, and Sb as the targeted contaminants in the soil surrounding a thallium mining region in southwestern China. Potential sources of toxic elements were identified using correlation analysis and principal component analysis. By interpreting the results of correlation and principal component analysis, the potential sources of Tl, Hg, As, and Sb were identified to include the mining and smelting industry.

Background: Chronic heavy alcohol drinking may be a modifiable risk factor for Alzheimer's disease (AD), but studies in rodent AD models more closely mimic chronic moderate alcohol drinking in humans and largely focus on the brain. The role of the liver, which is significantly impacted by chronic heavy alcohol intake, in driving brain changes in alcohol-dependent AD remains unexplored. Our study using intragastric-ethanol feeding, which mimics chronic heavy alcohol intake in humans, in C57BL/6J mice showed significant AD-relevant changes in the brain and liver.
