Eighteen substituted 2-phenyl benzothiazoles, nine of which are new, are described. Pharmacological investigation of these Fostedil analogues did not demonstrate the same calcium inhibitory properties shown by Fostedil. The enhancement induced by the diethyl phosphonate group is confirmed.

Gulf War Illness (GWI) has been consistently linked to exposure to pyridostigmine (PB), N,N-Diethyl-meta-toluamide (DEET), permethrin (PER), and traces of sarin. In this study, diisopropylfluorophosphate (DFP, sarin surrogate) and the GWI-related chemicals were found to reduce the number of functionally active neurons in rat hippocampal slices. These findings confirm a link between GWI neurotoxicants and N-Methyl-D-Aspartate (NMDA)-mediated excitotoxicity, which was successfully reversed by Edelfosine (a phospholipase Cβ (PLCβ3) inhibitor) and Flupirtine (a Kv7 channel agonist).

Cytocompatible Hydrogels with Tunable Mechanical Strength and Adjustable Swelling Properties through Photo-Cross-Linking of Poly(vinylphosphonates).

ACS Appl Mater Interfaces

October 2024

Technical University of Munich, Germany, TUM School of Natural Sciences, Department of Chemistry, WACKER-Chair of Macromolecular Chemistry, Lichtenbergstraße 4, 85748 Garching, Germany.

Article Synopsis
  • A new synthetic hydrogel was developed by cross-linking poly(vinylphosphonates) using controlled polymerization methods and photoinitiated thiol-ene click chemistry, allowing for precise adjustments in composition and properties.
  • The resulting hydrogels showed increased mechanical strength with more specific monomer units, but reduced water absorption due to increased hydrophobicity; however, functionalization improved water uptake significantly.
  • The final hydrogels demonstrated compatibility for cell growth, enabling adhesion of human umbilical artery smooth muscle cells and forming an endothelial layer without inducing inflammatory responses or losing antibacterial properties.

A new nanodevice based on gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) capped with poly(diethylvinylphosphonate) (PDEVP) has been synthesized, showing interesting photophysical and thermoresponsive properties. The synthesis involves a properly designed Yttriocene catalyst coordinating the vinyl-lutidine (VL) initiator active in diethyl vinyl phosphonate polymerization. The unsaturated PDEVP chain ending was thioacetylated, deacetylated, and reacted with tetrachloroauric acid and sodium borohydride to form PDEVP-VL-capped AuNPs.

Uncovering the Crucial Role of Chelating Structures in Cyano-Alkyl-Phosphate Electrolytes for High-Voltage Lithium Metal Batteries.

J Am Chem Soc

October 2024

Frontiers Science Center for New Organic Matter, Key Laboratory of Advanced Energy Materials Chemistry (Ministry of Education), State Key Laboratory of Advanced Chemical Power Sources, College of Chemistry, Nankai University, Tianjin 300071, China.

Article Synopsis
  • * The special chelating structures enhance the stability of the EEI, prevent electrolyte decomposition, and help maintain the structural integrity of the cathode by preventing transition metal dissolution.
  • * Ultimately, the research shows that the new electrolyte supports excellent lithium plating/stripping and maintains high performance, achieving 90% capacity retention in the LiNiCoMnO (NCM811) cathode after 300 cycles and 70% capacity

Diethyl ethylphosphonate retardants disturbed the gut microbiome and metabolite SCFAs in vitro based on simulator of the human intestinal microbial ecosystem.

Environ Pollut

December 2024

NMPA Key Laboratory for Safety Evaluation of Cosmetics, Guangdong Provincial Key Laboratory of Tropical Disease Research, Department of Environmental Health, School of Public Health, Southern Medical University, Guangzhou 510515, China. Electronic address:

Article Synopsis
  • - The study investigates the effects of Diethyl ethylphosphonate (DEEP), a new organophosphorus flame retardant, on the human gut microbiome using the SHIME system, as previous research on this topic is limited.
  • - Results showed that high doses of DEEP exposure decreased gut microbiome diversity (measured by the Shannon and Simpson index) while causing significant shifts in bacterial populations, notably increasing Bacillota and specific genera like Escherichia and Prevotella.
  • - Changes in the production of short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) were observed, with acetic and propionic acids increasing at higher DEEP doses, while butyric acid peaked at a medium dose; various bacteria displayed
