We show here that Br(2) intercalation is an efficient method to enable exfoliation of epitaxial graphene on metals by adhesive tape. We exemplify this method for high-quality graphene of macroscopic extension on Ir(111). The sample quality and the transfer process are monitored using low-energy electron diffraction (LEED), scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Raman spectroscopy. The developed process provides an opportunity for preparing graphene of strictly monatomic thickness and well-defined orientation including the transfer to poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) foil.

Motivated by the growing demand to integrate functional oxides with dissimilar materials, numerous studies have been undertaken to detach a functional oxide film from its original substrate, effectively forming a membrane, which can then be affixed to the desired host material. This review article is centered on the synthesis of functional oxide membranes, encompassing various approaches to their synthesis, exfoliation, and transfer techniques. First, we explore the characteristics of thin-film growth techniques with emphasis on molecular beam epitaxy.

Emergent electronic phenomena, from superconductivity to ferroelectricity, magnetism, and correlated many-body band gaps, have been observed in domains created by stacking and twisting atomic layers of Van der Waals materials. In graphene, emergent properties have been observed in ABC stacking domains obtained by exfoliation followed by expert mechanical twisting and alignment with the desired orientation, a process very challenging and nonscalable. Here, conductive atomic force microscopy shows in untwisted epitaxial graphene grown on SiC the surprising presence of striped domains with dissimilar conductance, a contrast that demonstrates the presence of ABA and ABC domains since it matches exactly the conductivity difference observed in ABA/ABC domains in twisted exfoliated graphene and calculated by density functional theory.

Two-dimensional (2D) nanosheets of boron, borophene, have triggered interest in progressive research as a result of the vast field of opportunities to explore, from its innovative synthetic techniques to novel properties and potential applications. It possesses exceptional tuneable properties such as mechanical flexibility, electronic and thermal conductivity, optical transparency, metallicity, anisotropy and polymorphism. This has sparked significant curiosity in the application of borophene-based materials in energy storage systems such as supercapacitors, which display high-power density with reliable energy density, fast charge/discharge kinetics and long cycle life.

Unlabelled: Recent advances in fabricating scalable two-dimensional or freestanding functional materials have shown promise for their use in modern silicon-based electronics and future technologies. A growing interest is in creating freestanding complex oxide membranes using new methods like epitaxial lift-off and mechanical exfoliation to enhance their quality and integrity. Despite these advances, it remains challenging to consistently produce high-quality freestanding oxide membranes on a large scale for practical use.
