Two women underwent a PCA total knee arthroplasty of the metal-backed type in which the tibial insert was only 4 mm thick in its thinnest portion. After 2 and 4 years, both women had pain on weight bearing due to polyethylene breakdown causing metal-to-metal contact. Such thin polyethylene components should not be used for knee replacements.

Background: Spacer-type tibial osteotomy have been proven a novel and effective osteotomy to treat osteoarthritis, while lack of comparison with other surgical methods in younger patients. This study aims to evaluate the short-term clinical outcomes of spacer-type tibial osteotomy versus open wedge high tibial osteotomy (OWHTO) and unicompartmental knee arthroplasty (UKA) for Kellgren-Lawrence (K-L) grade 3-4 osteoarthritis (OA) in patients younger than 65 years.
Methods: This retrospective study analyzed a total of 224 patients with K-L grade 3-4 knee OA treated from March 2018 to November 2020.

Periprosthetic osteolysis is the primary cause of arthroplasty failure in the majority of patients. Mechanistically, wear debris released from the articulating surfaces of a prosthesis initiates local inflammation and several modes of regulated cell death programs, such as ferroptosis, which represents a promising therapeutic target in various chronic inflammatory diseases. Thus, the current study aimed at exploring the therapeutic potential of targeting ferroptosis in a polyethylene-wear-debris-induced osteolysis model.

Janus graft copolymers, which combine the characteristics of block and graft copolymers, have been used in the fields of reaction catalysis, surface modification, and drug delivery, but their applications in lithium batteries have rarely been reported. Herein, Janus graft copolymers with polyethylene glycol (PEG) and polystyrene (PS) side chains are synthesized by combining reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization and atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) methods and doped with lithium salts to fabricate Janus bottlebrush polymer electrolytes (PEG-J-PS). The PEG side chains of the brush polymers impart good ion-conducting properties to the electrolytes, while the PS side chains improve the mechanical strength and thermal and chemical stability of the electrolytes.

Background: Vitamin E-diffused highly cross-linked polyethylene (HXLPE/Vit E) is a relatively advanced material used in total hip arthroplasty (THA) but whether it shows superiority is unclear.
Objective: This meta-analysis was performed to investigate the effect of HXLPE/Vit E liners in THA.
Methods: Medline/PubMed, Embase and Cochrane Library databases were searched to retrieve studies assessing the efficacy of HXLPE/Vit E liners in THA with the design of a randomized, controlled trial.

Case: A 75-year-old woman underwent cruciate retaining total knee arthroplasty (TKA) for osteonecrosis of the knee, converted from unicompartmental arthroplasty due to an intraoperative medial tibial plateau fracture. Four years later, she experienced persistent knee pain. Computed tomography revealed tibial malalignments in 2 planes.
