Background: Cancer cachexia represents a debilitating muscle wasting condition that is highly prevalent in gastrointestinal cancers, including pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC). Cachexia is estimated to contribute to ~30% of cancer-related deaths, with deterioration of respiratory muscles suspected to be a key contributor to cachexia-associated morbidity and mortality. In recent studies, we identified fibrotic remodelling of respiratory accessory muscles as a key feature of human PDAC cachexia.

Abnormal FDG uptake was noted in the right lower chest region, which was correlated on corresponding CT images to be colonic activity interposed between the liver and elevated diaphragm, also known as Chilaiditi sign. Even though rare, Chilaiditi sign should be considered as a differential diagnosis of hypermetabolic activity in the right lower chest region on 18F-FDG PET/CT scan that is done to look for occult tumor as shown in this case.

Lung tumors can be obscured in X-rays, preventing accurate and robust localization. To improve lung conspicuity for image-guided procedures, we isolate the lungs in the anterior-posterior (AP) X-rays using a lung extraction network (LeX-net) that virtually removes overlapping thoracic structures, including ribs, diaphragm, liver, heart, and trachea. Approach: 73,965 thoracic 3DCTs and 106 thoracic 4DCTs were included.
