Phenolic compounds are an extensive group of natural and anthropogenic organic substances of the aromatic series containing one or more hydroxyl groups. The main sources of phenols entering the environment are waste from metallurgy and coke plants, enterprises of the leather, furniture, and pulp and paper industries, as well as wastewater from the production of phenol-formaldehyde resins, adhesives, plastics, and pesticides. Among this group of compounds, phenol is the most common environmental pollutant.

Highly toxic phenol causes a threat to the ecosystem and human body. The development of bioremediation is a crucial issue in environmental protection. Herein, Rhodococcus biphenylivorans B403, which was isolated from the activated sludge of the sewage treatment plant, exhibited a good tolerance and removal efficiency to phenol.

Lonar Lake, India; a hypersaline and hyperalkaline extremophilic ecosystem having a unique microbial population has been rarely explored for bioremediation aspects. MinION-based shotgun sequencing was used to comprehensively compare the microbial diversity and functional potential of xenobiotic degradation pathways with seasonal changes. Proteobacteria and Firmicutes were prevalent bacterial phyla in the pre-monsoon and post-monsoon samples.
