Electrochemical oxidation of acyclovir at fullerene-C(60)-modified glassy carbon electrode has been investigated using cyclic and differential pulse voltammetry. In pH 7.4 phosphate buffer, acyclovir showed an irreversible oxidation peak at about 0.96V. The cyclic voltammetric results showed that fullerene-C(60)-modified glassy carbon electrode can remarkably enhance electrocatalytic activity towards the oxidation of acyclovir. The electrocatalytic behavior was further exploited as a sensitive detection scheme for the acyclovir determination by differential pulse voltammetry. Effects of anodic peak potential (E(p)/V), anodic peak current (I(p)/μA) and heterogeneous rate constant (k(0)) have been discussed. Under optimized conditions, the concentration range and detection limit were 9.0×10(-8) to 6.0×10(-6)M and 1.48×10(-8)M, respectively. The proposed method was applied to acyclovir determination in pharmaceutical samples and human biological fluids such as urine and blood plasma as a real sample. This method can also be employed in quality control and routine determination of drugs in pharmaceutical formulations.

Electrochemical behaviour of dexamethasone at the fullerene-C(60)-modified pyrolytic graphite electrode (PGE) has been investigated using Osteryoung square wave voltammetry (SWV). Compared to a bare PGE and fullerene-C(60)-modified glassy carbon electrode (GCE), the fullerene-C(60)-modified edge plane PGE exhibited an apparent shift of the peak potential to less negative potentials with a marked enhancement in the current response of dexamethasone. The peak potential was linearly dependent on pH with dE(p)/dpH as 59 mV/pH.

A new method for the determination of salbutamol has been developed using fullerene C60-modified glassy carbon electrode and validated using GC-MS. The presence of graphite and metallic impurities in C60 are found to diminish the peak. The oxidation of salbutamol was observed in a single well-defined, diffusion-controlled process using square wave voltammetry.

Electrochemical behaviour of methylprednisolone (MP) at the fullerene-C60-modified glassy carbon electrode has been investigated using differential pulse voltammetry. The experimental results suggest that the modified electrode exhibits electrocatalytic effect on the oxidation of MP resulting in a marked enhancement of the peak current response. Under the selected conditions, the oxidation peak current was linearly dependent on the concentration of MP in the range 5.

The electrochemical behaviour of nandrolone is investigated by cyclic, differential pulse and square-wave voltammetry in phosphate buffer system at fullerene-C60-modified electrode. The modified electrode shows an excellent electrocatalytic activity towards the oxidation of nandrolone resulting in a marked lowering in the peak potential and considerable improvement of the peak current as compared to the electrochemical activity at the bare glassy carbon electrode. The oxidation process is shown to be irreversible and diffusion-controlled.
