The analysis of marine phytoplankton using flow cytometry has enabled the discovery of new taxa and has contributed new understanding to the dynamics and ecological contributions of phytoplankton to the global carbon cycle. Marine phytoplankton are uniquely suited to analysis by flow cytometry because of their size, pigment content, and ability to remain in suspension. Cytometric analysis of marine populations is not without challenges. Phytoplankton communities span a broad range of sizes. The smallest microbes are a few tenths of a micron, while the largest are a few tenths of a millimeter. The improvement of cytometric measurements of scattered laser light allows one to investigate marine microbes whose sizes span several orders of magnitude. To effectively leverage the advantages that marine microbes possess, cytometers have to be carefully engineered for marine use.

Mangrove ecosystem has attracted global attention as a hotspot for mercury (Hg) methylation. Although numerous biotic and abiotic parameters have been reported to influence methylmercury (MeHg) production in sediments, the key factors determining the elevated MeHg levels in mangrove wetlands have not been well addressed. In this study, Hg levels in the sediments from different habitats (mudflats, mangrove fringe, and mangrove interior) in the Futian mangrove wetland were investigated, aiming to characterize the predominant factors affecting the MeHg production and distinguish the key microbial taxa responsible for Hg methylation.

Aims: The aim of this study was to evaluate the impact of the introduction of a phosphoribosylpyrophosphate synthetase (PRS) mutation into a plant growth-promoting strain of Methylorubrum on the enhancement of phyllosphere colonization, with the ultimate goal of improving plant growth and quality.
