Z-shape (1,2,7,8-tetrasubstituted) perylene derivatives are novel chromophores with great potential in various applications. Yet, the synthetic entry into this class of molecules is hitherto quite limited. In this communication, the synthesis of a series of Z-shape perylene derivatives via a double Wittig-Knoevenagel benzannulation protocol is reported. Preliminary photophysical and electrochemical studies indicate that the frontier orbital energy levels of these new perylene systems are modulated by electronic, regiochemical, and conformational effects.

The development of a sensory signal amplification approach is very crucial for rapid and precise detection of aflatoxin B (AFB). However, such approaches remain scarce due to the weak interactions between AFB and the sensing probes. Herein, the first example of a dual-excitation fluorescent platform for antibody-free AFB detection is reported, which is assembled by an ordered π-π stack of cationic perylene derivative (PTHA) and tris(2,2'-bipyridine)ruthenium(II) [Ru(bpy)].

Chiral organic molecules with a complementing π-structure are highly desired to obtain materials with good semiconducting properties and pronounced chirality effects in the visible region. Herein, we introduce a novel design strategy to achieve an axially chiral and rigid perylene bisimide (PBI) dye by attaching the chirality-inducing 2,2'-biphenoxy moiety at one side of the bay area and the rigidity-inducing di--butylsilanediol bridge on the other side. This yielded a new bay-functionalized PBI derivative carrying the combination of a highly rigid and, simultaneously, an axially chiral perylene core.

Electronics based on natural or degradable materials are a key requirement for next-generation devices, where sustainability, biodegradability, and resource efficiency are essential. In this context, optimizing the molecular chemical structure of organic semiconductor compounds (OSCs) used as active layers is crucial for enhancing the efficiency of these devices, making them competitive with conventional electronics. In this work, honey-gated organic field-effect transistors (HGOFETs) were fabricated using four different perylene derivative films as OSCs, and the impact of the chemical structure of these perylene derivatives on the performance of HGOFETs was investigated.

Benzo[ghi] perylene (b[ghi]p) is classified as non-carcinogenic to humans, and there are currently no occupational exposure models available to identify its effects. The aim of this work was to evaluate the effect of b[ghi]p on the lysosomes of NL-20 cells (a human bronchial cell line) exposed to 4.5 μM for 3 h.
