Article Abstract

The use of suitable chiral ligands is an efficient means of producing highly enantioselective transition-metal catalysts. Herein, we report a facile, economic, and effective strategy for the design of chiral ligands that demonstrate enhanced enantioselectivity and catalytic efficacy. Our simple strategy employs naturally occurring or synthetic inorganic nanosheets as huge and rigid planar substituents for, but not limited to, naturally available α-amino-acid ligands; these ligands were successfully used in the vanadium-catalyzed asymmetric epoxidation of allylic alcohols. The crucial role of the inorganic nanosheets as planar substituents in improving the enantioselectivity of the reaction was clearly revealed by relating the observed enantiomeric excess with the distribution of the catalytic centers and the accessibility of the substrate molecules to the catalytic sites. DFT calculations indicated that the LDH layer improved the enantioselectivity by influencing the formation and stability of the catalytic transition states, both in terms of steric resistance and H-bonding interactions.

Dehydrohelicenes are some of the most attractive chiroptical materials with unique helical chirality. However, to our knowledge, there are no prior reports on their direct construction by asymmetric methods. In this work, sequential synthesis of aza-oxa-dehydro[7]helicenes via the electrochemical oxidative hetero-coupling of 3-hydoxycarbazoles and 2-naphthols followed by dehydrative cyclization and intramolecular C-C bond formation has been realized.

Enantioselective Vanadium-Catalyzed Oxidative Coupling: Development and Mechanistic Insights.

The evolution of a more reactive chiral vanadium catalyst for enantioselective oxidative coupling of phenols is reported, ultimately resulting in a simple monomeric vanadium species combined with a Brønsted or Lewis acid additive. The resultant vanadium complex is found to effect the asymmetric oxidative ortho-ortho coupling of simple phenols and 2-hydroxycarbazoles with good to excellent levels of enantioselectivity. Experimental and quantum mechanical studies of the mechanism indicate that the additives aggregate the vanadium monomers.

The ONIOM scheme is one of the most popular QM/MM approaches, but its extended application has been so far hindered by the limited availability of force fields in most practical implementations. This paper describes a simple software code to overcome this limitation, and its application to three representative chemical problems. The "Shell Interface for Combining Tinker With ONIOM" (SICTWO) program gives access to all force fields available in the Tinker molecular mechanics program from a Gaussian09 or Gaussian16 calculation.

Asymmetric oxidative coupling reactions of hydroxycarbazoles have been established using a chiral dinuclear vanadium complex. To demonstrate the utility of vanadium-catalyzed reactions, we have used them to synthesize (+)-bi-2-hydroxy-3-carbazole in three steps from cyclohexanone and commercially available aniline derivatives.

Daphnanes and tiglianes are diterpenes with a shared tricyclic 5-7-6 ring system. Many members exhibit significant biological activities often associated with protein kinase C signaling. Many of these natural products (~100) have a C6-C7 α-epoxide whose influence on biological activity is little studied.
