Published: September 2012

3-Phenyllactic acid (PLA), which is an organic acid widely existing in honey and lactic acid bacteria fermented food, can be produced by many microorganisms, especially lactic acid bacteria. It was proved as an ideal antimicrobial compound with broad and effective antimicrobial activity against both bacteria and fungi. In addition, it could be used as feed additives to replace antibiotics in livestock feeds. This article presented a review of recent studies on the existing resource, antimicrobial activity, and measurement of PLA. In addition, microorganism strains and dehydrogenases producing PLA were reviewed in detail, the metabolic pathway and regulation of PLA synthesis in LAB strains were discussed, and high-level bioproduction of PLA by microorganism fermentation was also summarized.

Background: Pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) is a progressive disorder that can lead to right ventricular failure and severe consequences. Despite extensive efforts, limited progress has been made in preventing the progression of PAH. Mitochondrial dysfunction is implicated in the development of PAH, but the key mitochondrial functional alterations in the pathogenesis have yet to be elucidated.

The mechanisms underlying the impact of probiotic supplementation on health remain largely elusive. While previous studies primarily focus on the discovery of novel bioactive bacteria and alterations in the microbiome environment to explain potential probiotic effects, our research delves into the role of living Lactiplantibacillus (formerly known as Lactobacillus) and their conditioned media, highlighting that only the former, not dead bacteria, enhance the healthspan of Caenorhabditis elegans (C. elegans).

Deficit irrigation differentially modulates rhizosphere microbial community and metabolites of two potato genotypes differing in drought tolerance.

State Key Laboratory of Vegetable Biobreeding, Key Laboratory of Biology and Genetic Improvement of Tuber and Root Crop of Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, Institute of Vegetables and Flowers, Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences, No.12, Zhongguancun South Street, Haidian District, Beijing, 100081, PR China.

Beneficial interactions between plant root exudates and the rhizosphere microbial community can alleviate the adverse effects of environmental stress on crop yields, but these interactions remain poorly understood in potato growing in drying soil. We investigated the responses of rhizosphere soil microorganisms and metabolites, and biochemical and physiological responses of two potato genotypes with contrasting drought tolerance (drought tolerant 'C93' and drought sensitive 'Favorita'), to two different irrigation treatments imposing contrasting soil water availability in the field. Deficit irrigation altered rhizosphere soil bacterial communities and metabolites of C93 more than Favorita.

With the popularization of probiotic products, tapping high-quality probiotics is crucial. Therefore, in this study, Lacticaseibacillus rhamnosus (X9C17) was selected from a pool of 54 isolates for its remarkable ability to survive in simulated gastrointestinal fluid (Gastric juice: 81.08 %, intestinal juice: 48 %), after which its probiotic characteristics were evaluated.

-Lactoyl-phenylalanine (Lac-Phe) is a metabolite known for its appetite-suppressing and antiobesity properties, while phenyllactic acid (PLA) is recognized for its antibacterial activity. Both metabolites are derived from phenylalanine and lactic acid metabolism through peptidase and dehydrogenase activities. The aim of this study was to investigate the production of Lac-Phe and PLA in kimchi, focusing on the role of lactic acid bacteria (LAB).
