At the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century many famous persons stayed on the Croatian coast mostly because of touristic and health reasons, than because of natural beauties, scientific or political reasons. Most often they came from Austro-Hungary, Germany or Russia but also from our homelands. Among them were also many famous doctors, some known worldwide. The most distinguished were the surgeon Theodor Billroth, the bacteriologist and a Nobel prize winner Robert Koch, the pathologist Rudolf Virchow, and the psychiatrist Sigmund Freud. They left a deep impression and a big benefit at the area they stayed in.

Evaluating academic detailing as an antibiotic stewardship intervention in primary healthcare settings in Croatia.

BMC Prim Care

December 2024

Department of Endocrinology, University hospital Dubrava, Zagreb, Croatia, and School of Medicine, and University of Zagreb, Zagreb, Croatia.

Background: Acute respiratory tract infections are common in primary healthcare care settings and frequently result in antibiotic prescriptions, despite being primarily viral. There is scarcity of research examining impact of academic detailing (AD) intervention on prescribing practices for these infections in resource-constrained healthcare settings like southeastern Europe. Therefore aim of this study was to evaluate impact of AD intervention as an antimicrobial stewardship measure on antibiotic prescribing for acute respiratory tract infections in primary setting in Croatia which is located in southeastern Europe.

Epigenomics

November 2022

Division of Epidemiology, Department of Environmental & Public Health Sciences, University of Cincinnati College of Medicine, Cincinnati, OH 45267, USA.

The objective was to identify stable and dynamic DNA methylation loci associated with cardiometabolic traits among an adult population from the Croatian island of Hvar. An epigenome-wide association study was conducted using peripheral blood longitudinally collected at two time points 10 years apart via Infinium MethylationEPIC beadarray (n = 112). Stable and dynamic loci were identified using linear mixed models.

Article Synopsis
  • * Methods: Researchers conducted a retrospective analysis over 11 months in a Croatian COVID-19 hospital, examining clinical data and using regression analysis to assess the predictive values of inflammatory biomarkers.
  • * Results: More than half (55.3%) of the patients developed superinfections, primarily in the lower respiratory tract. Multidrug-resistant pathogens were prevalent and linked to higher mortality and extended ICU stays, with elevated ferritin and neutrophil counts indicating reduced survival chances.
