Published: March 2013

The last quarter of the twentieth century had witnessed a global surge in awakening against the unabated menace of environmental pollution. Among the various types of environmental pollution, water pollution is an age-old problem but it has gained an alarming dimension lately because of the problems of population increase, sewage disposal, industrial waste, radioactive waste, etc. Present scenario of water pollution calls for immediate attention towards the remediation and detoxification of these hazardous agents in order to have a healthy living environment. The present communication will deal with the toxicological effects of major environmental pollutants, viz. heavy metals, pesticides, and phenols.

Weeds are a concern in agriculture and the use of herbicides constitutes an effective, efficient, and economical way to control their growth. Recent discoveries of herbicides are promising for the management of resistant weeds. However, there is a gap in the knowledge of the toxic effects of some herbicides previously reported on immune cells.

The surge in plastic production has spurred a global crisis as plastic pollution intensifies, with microplastics and nanoplastics emerging as notable environmental threats. Due to their miniature size, these particles are ubiquitous across ecosystems and pose severe hazards as they are ingested and bioaccumulate within organisms. Although global plastic production has reached an alarming 400.

The NF concept was first established by Regulation (EC) 258/97 and includes any food that has not been used to a significant extent for human consumption in the EU before 15 May 1997. Synthetic novel foods (SNF) are a currently undefined group of NF without a universal definition. The objectives of this work are to perform an analysis of those currently authorized in the EU, identify their potential adverse effects and health benefits, and their health claims.

The bioaccumulation and toxic effects of synthetic phenolic antioxidants (SPAs) in aquatic ecosystems are of growing concern due to their widespread use and potential environmental persistence. This study investigated the detoxification and toxicological impacts of 2,6-ditert-butyl-4-methylphenol (BHT), a representative SPAs, on clams Ruditapes philippinarum using environmentally relevant exposure concentrations. BHT bioaccumulation was observed in both gills and digestive glands, with higher levels in the latter.

Point of departure (POD) is a concept used in risk assessment to calculate the reference dose of exposure that is likely to have no appreciable risk on health. POD can be directly utilized from no observed adverse effect levels (NOAEL) which is the dose or exposure level at which there is little or no risk of adverse effects. However, NOAEL values are unavailable for most of the chemicals due to inconsistent animal toxicity data.
