Autism spectrum disorders encompass diverse neurodevelopmental conditions marked by alterations in social communication and repetitive behaviors. Advanced maternal age is associated with an increased risk of bearing children affected by autism but the etiological factors underlying this association are not well known. Here, we investigated the effects of advanced maternal age on offspring health and behavior in two genetically divergent mouse strains: the BTBR T Itpr3/J (BTBR) mouse model of idiopathic autism, and the C57BL/6 J (B6) control strain, as a model of genetic variability.

The mechanical responses of sandy soil under dynamic loading is closely related to protective engineering and geotechnical engineering, is still not fully understood. To investigate the energy attenuation law and propagation velocity of compressed waves in dry sandy soil, this paper focuses on the dynamic response of compression waves in the specimen under single impact and repetitive impact conditions using an improved split Hopkinson pressure bar (SHPB). The results reveal that the length of the specimen follows an exponential relationship with the attenuation of the peak stress.

Sex-differences in the risk of carpal tunnel syndrome: results from a large Ontario, Canada worker cohort.

BMC Musculoskelet Disord

December 2024

Occupational Cancer Research Centre, Ontario Health, 525 University Avenue, 5th floor, Toronto, Ontario, M5G 2L3, Canada.

Background: Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is a prevalent cumulative strain injury associated with occupational risk factors such as vibration, repetitive and forceful wrist movements, and awkward wrist postures. This study aimed to identify Ontario workers at elevated risk for CTS and to explore sex differences in CTS risk among workers.

Methods: The Occupational Disease Surveillance System (ODSS) links accepted lost time compensation claims to health administrative databases.

ICEmST contributes to colonization of Salmonella in the intestine of piglets.

Sci Rep

December 2024

Division of Zoonosis Research, National Institute of Animal Health, National Agriculture and Food Research Organization, Tsukuba, Ibaraki, Japan.

Salmonella enterica serovar 4,[5],12:i:- sequence type 34 (ST34) has recently become a global concern for public and animal health. The acquisition of mobile genetic element ICEmST, which contains two copper tolerance gene clusters, cus and pco, influences the epidemic success of this clone. Copper is used as a feed additive in swine at levels that potentially lead to selection pressure for Enterobacteriaceae; however, it remains unclear whether the copper tolerance system of ICEmST functions in vivo.
