Article Abstract

The purpose of this study was to demonstrate the use of the self-organizing map (SOM) method for visualization, modeling, and comparison of trunk neuromuscular synergies during perturbed sitting. Thirteen participants were perturbed at the level of the sternum, in eight directions during sitting. Electromyographic (EMG) responses of ten trunk muscles involved in postural control were recorded. The SOM was used to encode the EMG responses on a 2-D projection (i.e., visualization). The result contains similar patterns mapped close together on the plot therefore forming clusters of data. Such visualization of ten EMG responses, following eight directional perturbations, allows for comparisons of direction-dependent postural synergies. Direction-dependent neuromuscular response models for each muscle were then constructed from the SOM visualization. The results demonstrated that the SOM was able to encode neuromuscular responses, and the SOM visualization showed direction-dependent differences in the postural synergies. Moreover, each muscle was modeled using the SOM-based method, and derived models showed that all muscles, except for one, produced a Gaussian fit for direction-dependent responses. Overall, SOM analysis offers a reverse engineering method for exploration and comparison of complex neuromuscular systems, which can describe postural synergies at a glance.

Spasticity is a common comorbidity of spinal cord injury (SCI), disrupting motor function and resulting in significant discomfort. While elements of post-SCI spasticity can be assessed using pre-clinical SCI models, the robust measurement of spasticity severity can be difficult due to its periodic and spontaneous appearance. Electrical stimulation of sensory afferents can elicit spasticity-associated motor responses, such as spasms; however, placing surface electrodes on the hindlimbs of awake animals can induce stress or encumbrance that could influence the expression of behaviour.

We examined differences in physiological responses to aversive and non-aversive naturalistic audiovisual stimuli and their auditory and visual components within the same experiment. We recorded five physiological measures that have been shown to be sensitive to affect: electrocardiogram, electromyography (EMG) for zygomaticus major and corrugator supercilii muscles, electrodermal activity (EDA), and skin temperature. Valence and arousal ratings confirmed that aversive stimuli were more negative in valence and higher in arousal than non-aversive stimuli.

We present a case report of a 42-year-old female with post-West Nile virus meningoencephalitis who exhibited unique, long-latency diaphragm potentials evoked by transcranial and cervical magnetic stimulation after exposure to acute intermittent hypoxia (AIH). The subject was recruited for a study investigating AIH effects on respiratory motor function in healthy individuals. She had contracted West Nile virus infection 5 years before assessment that resulted in hospitalization and persistent allodynia but was not reported to the research team.
